On 12 July 2024, a YSIAC Coffee Talk was held in Shanghai, China on career development for the young generation in international arbitration. The event was opened with remarks from Yuxian Zhao, Counsel, Han Kun Law Offices, and Gloria Lim, CEO, SIAC, followed by keynote speeches by Jennifer Lim, Co-Chair, YSIAC Council, and Mariana Zhong, APAC Lead, YSIAC Council. Moderated by Chengdong “C.D.” Xing, Member, YSIAC Council, the panel speakers Alan Li, Xin Liu, Michael (Haomin) Zhang, Yixuan Zhu, Members, YSIAC Council, Vivienne Li Weiyan, and Yang Liu, shared their views and experiences on career paths in international arbitration. As a side event of the SIAC China Conference 2024, the event provided a platform for younger arbitration talents to exchange ideas and build up connections. Cunyuan ZHANG, Director & Head, China, and Donghui Shen, Strategy & Development Manager, China, from our China office, represented the SIAC team at the event. Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) held its annual China Conference on 11 July 2024 in Shanghai, China. The conference was opened by Welcome Remarks from Gloria Lim, CEO, SIAC, followed by opening speeches by Edwin Tong SC, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, and Second Minister for Law and Zhang Xiong, Deputy Secretary General of Shanghai Municipal People’s Government. During the conference, SIAC signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with three Bar Associations: Jiangsu Lawyers Association, Shanghai Lawyers Association, and Shandong Lawyers Association, to strengthen cooperation and promote best practices in international arbitration. With leading experts and legal practitioners in attendance, the conference drew more than 180 attendees and featured keynote speeches by Lucy Reed, President, SIAC Court of Arbitration and Christopher Lau, SC, Chartered Arbitrator, and closing remarks by Siraj Omar, S.C., Member, SIAC Board of Directors. Moderated by Lijun Cao, Jessica Fei, Members, SIAC Court of Arbitration, and Theng Fong Hee (许廷芳), the panel speakers Hock Keng Chan, Member, SIAC Court of Arbitration, Chen Jian, Zhida Chen, Kian Heong Hew, Henry Huang, Alan Li, Vivienne Li Weiyan, Joan Lim-Casanova, Albert Marsman, Ong William, Melvin See, Dr. Minli Tang, Wang Weijun, Fang ZHAO, and John (Zhiqing) Zou, discussed the Languages and Culture of International Arbitration; Arbitration Procedures: Balancing Considerations of Speed, Quality and Due Process; and Harnessing Technology to Advance Core Values of International Arbitration. SIAC and Institutional Arbitration course at NUS | 26-29 September 2024 Arbitral institutions are important stakeholders in the field of international arbitration, but the nature and importance of their role have often been overlooked. The SIAC and Institutional Arbitration course seeks to introduce participants to the role and function of arbitral institutions in guiding and shaping the practice and development of international arbitration, and to the complex issues that arbitral institutions face in the administration of arbitrations, including, among others, the appointment of arbitrators and the issuance of arbitral rules and practice notes. The Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) held its SIAC Tokyo Conference on 3 July 2024 in Tokyo, Japan. The conference themed “Strengthening Ties and Resolving Disputes Between Japanese and Indian Companies” brought together leading international arbitration experts from India, Japan, and Singapore to discuss strategies for enhancing corporate partnerships and effective dispute resolution between Indian and Japanese companies. Highlights included a Keynote Address by SIAC Court Member Darius J. Khambata, SC, titled “Why Rule of Law Matters to Arbitration,” and a Fireside Chat featuring SIAC Board Member Cyril Shroff and SIAC Court Member Hiroyuki Tezuka, exploring the evolving investment and disputes landscape in Japan and India.
