  • 🌟 Meet Audrey Chan, our #DiscoverMHA intern! 🌟 Audrey has taken on the role of a Civilian Generalist at MHA during the school holidays. She delved into "Strategic Planning" and "International Relations," two of the 12 key domain areas available to Generalists, gaining valuable experience in these critical fields during her internship 👏💯 Here's what Audrey has to share about her internship journey! --- Beginning with a month-long internship in the Planning and Organisation Division (P&O) and a six-month stint in the International Cooperation and Partnerships Division (ICPD), my internship journey at the Ministry of Home Affairs Headquarters (MHQ) has been nothing short of eventful! I experienced the breadth and depth of MHQ's dynamic work environment. At P&O, I had my first glimpse into the intricate workings of the Home Team. My project focused on improving capability development. I created a dataset that clearly outlined common bottlenecks to help reduce the operational timelines for projects within the Home Team. It was rewarding to later find out that my work served as a foundation for future P&O interns. I also had the opportunity to attend weekly team meetings, as well as division-level meetings, which allowed me to gain valuable insights into the dynamics of a professional environment and the strategic decision-making processes within a Ministry. At ICPD, I worked on international human rights issues related to the ministry’s work, focusing particularly on female offenders and the death penalty. Besides conducting a horizon scan on the death penalty, I researched key debates on the death penalty as well as notable developments in the EU on the death penalty that are relevant to Singapore. For the last three months, I joined the Financial Action Task Force President’s Office (FATF PO) Team, where I primarily assisted with the preparations for the June Plenary Meeting held in Singapore. I also had varied learning opportunities including participating in the Milipol Asia-Pacific and TechX Summit! The stint at ICPD has allowed me to delve deeper into MHQ's dynamic and warm culture as I joined my colleagues and fellow interns for monthly Coffee Connect events, ICPD’s Café Session with MHQ Leaders, and MHQ’s Town Hall. The ministry’s unwavering commitment to continuous improvement, evident in the receptiveness of senior leadership to feedback and the ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing various facets of the organisation, left a particularly deep impression on me. I always look back fondly on these memories and would like to take this opportunity to give a big shout out to my colleagues and supervisors! They welcomed us with open arms, were always so friendly and caring, and treated us interns like part of the team. I'm incredibly grateful for their constant support and the priceless advice they shared with us along the way. ❤

  • 🌟 Meet Bethany Lew, our #DiscoverMHA intern! 🌟 Bethany has taken on the role of a Civilian Generalist, working on projects that support Career Transition (CT) for retiring Home Team uniformed officers. From engaging stakeholders and reviewing CT programmes to curating communication materials and exploring data visualisation and automation tools, her journey has been nothing short of inspiring! 👏💯 Here's what Bethany has to share about her 6-month internship with us! ------------------------------- When I first applied for the #DiscoverMHA Internship, I did not know what to expect. What even is a Civilian Generalist? How can one’s job be generalised and not specialised? I was assigned to a project that focuses on Career Transition (CT) – helping retiring uniformed officers to upskill and sufficiently prepare themselves for a second career outside of the force, as they have an earlier retirement age than their civilian counterparts. I started off with looking through CT policies, interacting with various stakeholders from the various Home Team Departments and seeing how the policies could be better refined. Then, I was tasked with sourcing for relevant upskilling courses to be recommended to officers, before my work pivoted to curating communication materials to advertise our workshops to them. Now, I am dabbling in tools such as Tableau and UiPath, to make our work more efficient! Amongst all the work that I’ve done, the most memorable experience was interacting with the retiring uniformed officers when we invited them to our workshops. They were so eager and earnest in their upskilling efforts, giving constructive feedback on our initiatives. The policies we work on have a real-life impact on them, and even the slightest change could make their lives so much better! Besides the broad range of work I’ve been exposed to, another thing that has resonated with me is how incredible the work-life balance is here at MHA Headquarters (MHQ). Besides the flexi work arrangements, there are so many events that are organised to upkeep the well-being of officers at MHQ. From Coffee Connects, where food is catered and officers come down to network with their colleagues, to movie screenings. The range of activities is mind-blowing. I once attended a Positive Psychology workshop organised by the Home Team Psychologists, and there was a segment where we all sat there and meditated! As I look back on my time here, I realised that my perspective on MHA has vastly broadened. From the groundwork of the 10 Home Team agencies, to the office work of the 14 MHQ Divisions, there is really something for everyone in MHA. Thank you, MHA, for letting me intern with you! ❤

  • We're thrilled to be part of the career exploration journey of 23 bright young students, who joined us as #DiscoverMHA interns over their 5-week holidays in March 2024! Our interns gained first-hand experiences as MHA Civilian Generalists, making positive impact and direct contributions to Singapore's safety and security landscape. From policy development to process automation, and from community engagement to content creation, they worked on meaningful projects that spanned across varied domain areas in policy development, strategic planning, corporate comms, human resource and training! 🤯 But it wasn't just about the work. Our interns immersed themselves in the #HomeTeam culture through events, meetings, and chit chats with our leaders and fellow MHA officers. These interactions allowed them to gain insights into how MHA navigate its challenges and opportunities 🧐🧐 At the offboarding session, what stood out in their sharing was the supportive culture that permeates many aspects of the organisation. A special mention goes to our dedicated supervisors, who volunteered their time and expertise to mentor our interns. Their unwavering support and guidance were instrumental in shaping the interns' experience of what it means to be a Home Team officer! 🙌💯 We hope our interns cherished the memories, lessons, and connections made during their time here! 🌟 #OneHomeTeam #DiscoverHomeTeam #HomeTeamCareer #DiscoverMHA #Internship
