👩🎓 Despite comprising 34-40% of employees in Southeast Asia’s technology sector, women take up only 20-30% of technical roles and just 9% of leadership positions. Why the disparity? The recent panel discussion, Smashing the Glass Ceiling – Women Who Have Cracked the Code, at ATxSummit 2024, brought together some of the most successful women in tech to share their journeys and discuss overcoming systemic challenges. The interventions outlined in a report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in partnership with IMDA, were focal points of the discussion, shedding light on how to eliminate the glass ceiling in tech. The report illuminates “Four Moments of Truth”, pivotal junctures that shape the trajectory of women’s careers in tech. 🎉 Wrapping up Day 2 of #ATxSummit! Here are today’s key takeaways: 💬In her welcome speech, Singapore’s Minister for Communications & Information Josephine Teo outlined the country’s approach to AI governance, noting that the objectives are to provide a safer environment for business and citizens to use AI and enable AI innovation. 💬Following this was an illuminating discussion around the proliferation of deepfakes, where experts agreed that a global multi-stakeholder approach bringing together governments, industry, civil society, and academia is needed to tackle the challenge. 💬The next session focused on how AI practitioners and adopters can proactively address risks and foster public trust through evaluation, testing, and governance of AI systems. This was followed by enriching discussions on advancing the science of AI safety, with industry collaboration and open sourcing of AI models emerging as key priorities. 💬The spotlight then shifted to education and how it must evolve to keep pace with societal and technological changes. Panellists agreed that technology has the potential to address the "educational trilemma" of quality, speed, and affordability in education systems. 💬A fitting end to #ATxSummit were two women-centric panels. The first explored how to close the gender gap in tech, while the other focused on the opportunities that women have in the field today, which never existed before. What a stellar second half of Day 2 at #ATxSummit! The last sessions of the event were truly thought-provoking and uplifting. At The Learning Revolution – Rebooting Future Education panel, experts discussed the potential for leveraging technology to personalise education and account for learners’ unique pace, styles, and abilities. They also highlighted the importance of providing professional development opportunities for teachers, and addressing challenges at individual, institutional, and systemic levels. The next two sessions shone a spotlight on women in tech. The Smashing the Glass Ceiling – Women Who Have Cracked the Code panel saw esteemed leaders share personal stories and insights on how we can encourage women to join, stay, and thrive in the tech industry. Closing the day, the Things I Wish I Knew in My 20s – This Generation of Women Owning the Tech Space panel explored actionable strategies to nurture women talents and future leaders in STEM. The panellists’ anecdotes showcased the value of tenacity in overcoming challenges. As we reimagine education for the future, building the capacity to learn will be key for success. At The Learning Revolution – Rebooting Future Education panel, Singapore’s Minister for Education, Chan Chun Sing, along with other leaders, explored the role of technology in education as it evolves to meet the demands of the future workforce. Minister Chan shared these key insights: - The success of our education system lies in bringing the best out of diverse individuals. - Adaptive learning systems, enabled by technology, allow for personalised education that caters to different needs and can be deployed at scale. - The purpose of education is not just helping individuals find answers but empowering them with skills to ask the right questions and develop lifelong skills. - Developing a future-ready workforce requires collaboration between academia, government, industries, and individuals.
