Getting a job in climate is tough, particularly if you are switching industries! I think one of the best approaches is to show your horsepower by solving problems that companies are facing. One of the best examples of this approach that I have seen is the brand audit that Art Lapinsch 🔋🌳🛡️did for Lilac Solutions. I am not a brand expert, but Art's work looks and feels a lot like the work product from major brand & marketing agencies that I paid tens of thousands of dollars for at prior jobs. I particularly loved how Art shows his skills and expertise. - Clear frameworks to guide his work - Careful and thorough analysis - Concise recommendations - Well developed execution plan Well done!! Amazing job!! If you are looking for a job in climate, try this same approach. 1️⃣ Identify a company and role that interests you 2️⃣ Deeply research the company, and come up with a perspective about what is working and what needs improvement 3️⃣ Draft and publish a work product that showcases your knowledge and expertise to help the company achieve its goals 4️⃣ Distribute your work on social media, and (most importantly) email your work to the company and others in the sector with the goal of starting a conversation This is quite a bit of work, but companies (particularly startups) want / need help. So, share your passions, skills, and experience!

Permanence. There is a big discussion in the climate tech community regarding permanence of carbon removals. While I agree, that a 10.000+ year permanence (how long the carbon is locked) is great, the big junk of our work in removing carbon from the atmosphere and avoiding emissions is primarily in the next 20 years. So I think rather than focusing on long term storage, we should focus on the most scalable and affordable ways to remove carbon short term (so we have time to transition our economy and society to carbon neutral). A good read here is the paper "Oxford Principles for Net Zero Aligned Carbon Offsetting" which also includes the chart shown below. They see the need for carbon removal with higher risk of reversal as intermediate technology.

What is the actual difference between a biodiversity unit and a biodiversity credit? When dealing with a new industry it is critical that everyone understands the specific terminology. Biodiversity Units is the core BNG unit of measurement and what we at Gaia help buy and sell, and have over 25,000 on our exchange. "When should investors give up on 1.5C? Could climate activists do more harm than good by clinging to an unachievable target" asks Jakob Thomä in Responsible Investor. In an opinion piece challenging much of conventional climate wisdom Jakob lays out a case for acknowledging that '1.5C no overshoot' is equivalent to the emporer with no clothes. "And so, while not a single investor I talk to still believes 1.5C no overshoot is actually on the table, nobody wants to be 'that guy' pointing it out in public." "But now is the winter (and spring and summer) of our discontent. One investor I spoke with told me they feel like the community is engaging in a collective act of “suspending disbelief”, as panels and conferences & sustainability reports & target-setting frameworks parade a “zombie” 1.5C no overshoot goal." Nature restoration - a billion $ opportunity? At least in Denmark 🇩🇰 ... The new proposed Danish carbon tax on agriculture is no doubt a novel and inspiring move: 🌱 From 2030 onwards, Danish livestock farmers will be taxed effectively 120 DKK / 17 € per tonne of CO2 equivalent, and then 300 DKK / 43 € in 2035 🌱 The law includes significant tax breaks for farmers that reduce emissions. BUT Not to be missed - the proposed legislation is also trailblazing for #naturerestoration and #rewilding! 💡 The proposal includes the launch of a new DKK 40 billion (USD$5.7 billion) "Green Area Fund" targeting initiatives such as afforestation, extraction of low-lying land, strategic land acquisition and subsidies for rewilding. In addition it includes plans to develop 250,000 hectares of forest (of which 100,000 hectares must be ‘untouched’, ie. with no forestry operations) - an almost mind-blowing areal for a small country like Denmark. Nature restoration and biodiversity have immense economical value - and we're now on the financial and regulatory journey to acknowledge that.

Next up…. ‘What do natural capital buyers want now and in the future?’ A lot of complexity on this one. BNG - biodiversity net gain. A tangle of policy, measurements, regulations and finance incl TNFD which is a ‘selfish measure for corporates to show they will be able to navigate the environmental transition’ Messages - catchment level thinking, farmer clusters, green funding,and linking Grey Infrastructure projects. Farmers looking at farms with a different lens. What parts are auitable for a TNFD trade? But how to baseline - for say £5k when famers are reluctant to spend on thst - despite buying a combine for £500k to harvest an unprofitable crop. Good question - what about farms that have already been responsible, and improved their land. Should they plough up their land to get a low baseline? Backdating 31st Jan 2020 - so you can go back to then. But really there was no real answer to this. Other than maybe paying more for the harder improvements after the easy wins. This appoach will be rasier in private markets Insurers are involved - to do with the scale and ‘strength of the covenant’ From a recent cluster - private investors like tangible outcomes - like ‘I planted 10 trees” when they are being measured on flood management and watercourse nutrients. Final comments - the future technology could help to track outcomes for investors- blockchain etc. An interesting session. Understanding intangibles, and emotions a clear and pressing need.

Here's why debt financing matters for climatetech startups: ➡ Beyond software: Many climatetech solutions involve physical components or hardware. Factoring in debt early helps secure the necessary capital for these aspects. ➡ Specialized skillset needed: Understanding debt structures, covenants, and project presentations requires a different skillset than attracting VCs. Startups considering debt financing may need to adjust their team accordingly. ➡ Hybrid models are key: Combining VC funding with debt or asset-backed securities allows for faster scaling, especially crucial in the rapidly evolving decarbonization space. ➡ Creative business structures: Companies have demonstrated the potential for separate entities within a startup, attracting investors for specific project aspects. ❓ Is there an optimal time for startups to consider their future financing needs? ❓ Will hybrid VC-debt models become commonplace in climatetech? ❓ Which areas of climatetech are best suited for these structures? Climate tech funding: biggest CDR deal and more renewables! Stockholm Exergi signs 3.33M ton permanent CDR contract with Microsoft, largest in market The agreement represents the world’s largest permanent removals deal to date. The deliveries of the carbon removal certificates to Microsoft are planned to start in 2028 and continue for a period of ten years. Will be from bio-energy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) at Värtan, Stockholm. The plant will permanently remove up to 800,000 tonnes of CO₂ from the atmosphere per year. Pine Gate Renewables announces a $650 million total investment from Generate Capital The investment provides funding to accelerate Pine Gate’s work as a national developer, owner, and operator of clean energy projects and will support the financing of an incremental three gigawatts (GW) of clean energy infrastructure by 2025. Pine Gate’s operational fleet includes over 100 solar facilities accounting for more than two gigawatts (GW) of installed capacity and it has over 30 GW of projects in development. Developer energyRe gets US$240 million for solar-plus-storage project Will fund the 108MWdc/198MWh Lone Star solar-plus-storage project in South Carolina. Bank of America provided a $85 million tax equity commitment, while Santander committed a $155 million for project financing. The latter includes construction debt, a tax equity bridge facility and a letter of credit facility. AiDash Closes its oversubscribed Series C funding round at $58.5 Million Round drew in additional investors, including leading PE firm The Lightsmith Group Group, Marubeni Corporation, Duke Energy Corporation, and Sabancı Ventures. It positions the company to successfully execute on its global growth ambitions. AiDash is an enterprise SaaS company making critical infrastructure industries climate resilient and sustainable with satellites and AI. More big moves. Microsoft really going big in its commitment to clean energy and decarbonization. And another successful growth round in climate tech, which is very encouraging! It takes 50 years to reabsorb deforestation emmissions! You often hear/read me drone on about the critical importance of avoidance carbon credits, particularly in the context of avoided deforestation. Steve Zwick elegantly summarised why those in the nature based solutions space insist on avoidance credits, citing this 2019 paper from Nature: One hectare of deforestation emits 355 tons of CO2 (all at once). One hectare of reforestation absorbs 6.7 tons of CO2 per year. In other words, it will take 50 years for newly planted trees to reabsorb the carbon released by every hectare deforested today.
