This morning, on my way into the office, I experienced a valuable reminder of why physical security is so important. I was able to "tailgate" a (for me an unknown) colleague from another Visma company into our building. He used his ID card to unlock the door, and I followed closely behind him. Thankfully, he was alert and questioned me about my own ID card. I really appreciated it.
- Lessons Learned -
This situation highlighted a few key points:
1. Tailgating is a real threat. Even in familiar environments, unauthorized people might try to slip through secured access points without showing their credentials.
2. Security is a shared responsibility. It was reassuring to see my colleague demonstrating vigilance and upholding our security protocols.
3. We can never be too careful. Even small lapses in security procedures leave us vulnerable.
- What is Tailgating? -
Tailgating occurs when an unauthorized person closely follows an authorized person through a secured entry point. It might be tempting to hold the door open for someone, especially if they seem harmless or familiar, but this opens up a potential security risk.
- How Can We Prevent Tailgating? -
🛡 Be aware of your surroundings. Notice who's around you, especially when entering or exiting secured areas.
🛡 Don't be afraid to ask questions. If someone you don't recognize is trying to enter, politely ask to see their identification.
🛡 Challenge those who don't follow protocol. Remind people to use their own badges, even if you know them. Being polite doesn't mean compromising security.
🛡 Report suspicious activity. If you see something concerning, let your security team or supervisor know.
- Keep Your Workplace Secure -
By staying aware, asking questions, and working together, we can all do our part to keep our workplace safe and prevent unauthorized access.
Remember, security is everyone's responsibility!
