Where do venture investors put their money right now? AI, life science, and climate are definitely among the top contenders. But different sub-categories also start to emerge. One of them seems to be accounting-related startups. Most recently shown with Danish company Ageras that during the week announced a round of 82M Euro. According to Crunchbase more than 419M Euro have been invested in the space this year alone. Here are some of the most recent rounds: 🇩🇰 Ageras: 82M Euro 🇺🇸 FloQast: 93M Euro 🇳🇱 DataSnipper: 93M Euro Investors have been keen on the space for years, as it fits well with the rational spreadsheet. Little money in on one end, more money out at the other. The trend isn't new. One of the pioneers in the space Intuit turned 40 last year. The game-changer this time around is AI - the promised land of automation seems to be just around the corner. Tech investing and company building are my working life and what I spend most of my time thinking about. Yet, sometimes, other topics impose themselves on you. Last week, the craziest thing happened to me. As I was riding my bike to work after the school drop-off, a guy in a car simply…spat on me ☂️. Here is what happened: A driver was going too fast and almost clipped me. I asked her to slow down when I caught up with her at the next traffic light. Then the driver behind us starting honking and, at the next intersection, cut me off. He then rolled down his window, started to argue that I had nothing to do on the road, and eventually spat on me as he made off. I guess sitting bumper to bumper in Manhattan traffic every morning at rush hour does make one rather angry. It could have been a lot worse - at least I’m still alive and well to joke about it. Not everyone is as lucky. Last year, 260 people died and 46,000 got injured in traffic crashes in NYC. This is an insane level of violence, which we shouldn’t take as an immutable fact of life. We can and have a moral duty to do better. I love NYC. There is no equivalent to the people it brings together. But its infrastructure is not up to par: the streets are dirtier, noisier, more dangerous, more congested and more polluted than they have any right to be. There is one overwhelming reason for it: they have been overtaken by an excessive number of enormous cars. Consider this: Only 45% of NYC households own a car (22% in Manhattan). 70% of NYC residents commute by public transport, bike or foot. Yet 75% of our shared streetscape is dedicated to cars (both driving and parked). Cars are great in many places, but not in dense city centers. So how can we make NYC streets 10x better in less than 10 years? Based on what worked in other cities, here are the 5 most impactful measures: 💳 Congestion pricing so we reduce the number of cars and fund improvements to subways and busses 🅿️ Fewer on-street parking spots to improve visibility at intersections and enable trash containerisation (bye bye rats and trash summer smell 👋🏻) 🚲 Protected bike lanes on every major road and avenue to make it safer for people to take on cycling 🚸 Low-traffic neighborhoods (stopping vehicles from using residential streets as shortcuts, while maintaining access) to remove noise pollution and give the streets back to residents 🚶🏽♀️Car-free streets in core retail areas to turbo-charge local businesses and provide great public space to residents and tourists. But we need policy change for this to happen — for the city’s leaders to step up and fight for a city built for people, not cars. Last year I joined the board of Transportation Alternatives and made a point to donate to their work. But it’s not enough. WOMEN’S HEALTH: INVESTING IS WHERE CHANGE HAPPENS Women’s health is the hot issue in the press and in policy discussions today. At Portfolia, we’re thankful that it’s finally getting the attention that it deserves. Ingar S. Bentsen and the team just launched TF Sportstech Fund, a major initiative supporting startups and scaleups at the intersection where technology meets the sports industry. With the fund comes the first round of Sportstech Academy in partnership with Igloo Innovation and Jarle Aambø, former Elite Sport Director of Olympiatoppen, Norwegian Olympic & Paralympic Committee and Confederation of Sports. The reel views are almost the exact same as the number who saw it through my Stories - which was also significantly lower than usual. This means the only people who saw it, are the ones who are actively following my profile. 🤷♂️ Why did it happen? I *think* because in the caption I tagged several, different political parties who are joining our panel on Thursday. This is my best guess - open to other suggestions? 💻 Why am I posting this on LinkedIn? 1. Hoping it reaches people who are unsure about the upcoming election, who want join the event - panel and Q&A with candidates + dinner 💛 2. Relevant topic for us working in tech on how to monitor platforms. Realheart recently released its Q1 report for 2024. A week later, CEO Ina Laura Perkins participated in a report interview at Direkt Studios (Swedish). "The reason I could be here at Direkt Studios only now, is that at the time of the report release, I was in the #US visiting #cardiologists and having discussions with two major hospital systems. There is an incredible amount of interest in our artificial heart and the response when the surgeons saw all the stable values in the sheep in connection with our latest implantation was ‘Wow, it looks great, like a natural heart’,’ says Realheart's CEO Ina Laura Perkins. ❤️ In the interview, Ina Laura talks about the US visit and how much it means for future market launches there. For example, one of the hospitals visited performs more heart transplants per year than is done in Sweden during the same period. 🍀 Other interesting points are 🍀 ✔️ The second implantation with more than four days survival has been achieved. ✔️ Important and relevant feedback from the surgeons has led to anatomical changes to the heart pump so that it is now more organic and similar in shape to a human heart. It is also generally smaller. This is thanks to the realisation of being able to cross the two pumps, thus freeing up space. ✔️ Dates for implantation have been booked and work is now continuing to optimize blood handling and the heart-lung machine. ✔️ The 10-day survival milestone remains a goal. ✔️ New laboratory data at the blood cell level will be presented at ASAIO, where the results are a great proof of good blood handling. ✔️ Unique to test on human blood, which is most sensitive, most clinically relevant and best for risk mitigation. ✔️ New chairman of the board, Magnus Öhman, with solid experience from the #commercialisation of the #pacemaker. 💰 Yesterday's Revenue & Business Models session for the Nordic (Spring 2024) Accelerator Program was packed with insights! 🎙 Founders pitched their startup ideas and also shared their revenue model with Mentors for feedback and continued refinement. 💡 When building at early-stage, it is extremely important to figure out how to sustain your startup before receiving financing or revenue. "Cash is the King," was a punchline of the session meaning that founders need to have a rock solid control of a startup's cash flow in early days.
