SciLifeLab Researchers Elected to EMBO Membership! SciLifeLab Group Leaders Tuuli Lappalainen (KTH Royal Institute of Technology) and Mats Nilsson (Stockholms universitet), and Oliver Billker (Umeå University) who is involved in the SciLifeLab & Wallenberg National Program for Data-Driven Life Science (Knut och Alice Wallenbergs Stiftelse), have been elected to EMBO membership. A total of 120 scientists from Europe and beyond have been elected, in a celebration of research excellence and outstanding achievements in the life sciences. “The new EMBO Members and Associate Members have made immense contributions to fundamental life science research, and in many cases, their work has paved the way for innovations that have improved lives and livelihoods around the world", said EMBO Director Fiona Watt. This June, we held the SciLifeLab Facility Forum 2024 at Clarion Hotel Sign in Stockholm. This event, dedicated to our infrastructure personnel, brought together over 400 participants, continuing our growth since the first Forum in 2017. In the video below, Liane Hughes (SciLifeLab Data Centre) and Niclas Jareborg (NBIS – National Bioinformatics Infrastructure Sweden) share their thoughts on the event. The Facility Forum serves as a garden bed to promote cross-facility collaborations, enhance community feeling among platform and facility personnel, and address specific infrastructure issues. It also focuses on competence development and provides time for discussion and exchange. One of the highlights was a session with both the current and new SciLifeLab directors, Olli Kallioniemi and Jan Ellenberg, discussing their visions for the future of Life Science and SciLifeLab. Additionally, the program included various sessions and workshops aimed at enhancing collaboration and professional growth. Femke Hormann, postdoctoral researcher at SciLifeLab and Karolinska Institutet (KI), has been awarded the prestigious Junior Research Grant from the European Hematology Association (EHA)! The grant supports her groundbreaking work on the mechanism of action of the nucleoside analog nelarabine in treating leukemia. Hormann's research, conducted in collaboration with the Chemical Biology & Genome Engineering Platform (CBGE) at SciLifeLab, aims to unlock the full potential of nelarabine in clinical settings. For the third consecutive year, SciLifeLab actively participated in the democracy meetings in Almedalen. We organized four panel discussions and engaged as panelists and discussion partners in seminars hosted by other organizers. New research from Uppsala universitet, co-authored by SciLifeLab co-director Mia Phillipson, reveals the crucial role of macrophages in healing ischemic injuries. The study shows that macrophages in adult ischemic muscle can switch into mural cells, supporting the restoration of functional blood flow and promoting healing. This discovery offers new insights into treatments for cardiovascular diseases, emphasizing the importance of immune cells in tissue regeneration and remodeling! Read more in the article below:
