Opioid dependence is a serious, chronic and relapsing disease that impacts all aspects of a person's daily life, their families, friends, and society. Opioids is considered to cause the greatest societal burden of all drugs. Still, only half of all high-risk users in Europe receive treatment for their opioid dependence. (1) In Sweden, almost 60,000 opioid users are out of treatment. The reason is often both stigma and lack of knowledge on how to get treatment. (2) This month, Camurus Sweden has – in a strive to improve the situation, reduce stigma and help users in their journey towards a better life – launched a Swedish website aimed at informing users, caregivers and the public about opioid dependence, its impact and where to find support. Interdisziplinärer Kongress für Suchtmedizin, taking place 4-6 July in Munich, Germany.  The congress brings together around 800 attendees for knowledge sharing and discussions on latest research and practices around disease, therapy and care for people with diverse dependencies. Camurus is honored to be sponsoring and excited to be participating in the 16th European Congress on Heroin Addiction & Related Clinical Problems, taking place in Lisbon, Portugal on June 28-30, 2024. Exciting milestone! We are getting prepared for the upcoming move of Camurus’ headquarters beginning of 2025, and on 26 June, the Steering Committee for the project conducted a site visit to our new sustainable facilities at The Loop, Science Village in Lund, Sweden. Camurus is honored to support Dianova’s international campaign "Leave No One Behind”, launched on 26 June – the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which aims to reduce stigma and improve access to addiction treatments for all.  Women, LGBTQI+, older and young people with addiction problems face additional barriers to accessing treatment for their drug dependence and are underrepresented in treatment programs. According to United Nations' estimates, 1 in 17 people worldwide used an illegal substance in 2021, which is 23% more than 10 years ago. Overall, 1 in 3 people with problematic substance use are women, but only 1 in 5 people in treatment are women. With the key message that drug use is increasing around the world, but treatment is not – at least not for everyone, the call to action of the campaign is to improve access to addiction services, making it available to all without discrimination. Camurus has for the first time submitted the annual Communication on Progress questionnaire for the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world's largest sustainability network for companies. “We have made significant progress in our sustainability performance, such as further strengthened our compliance framework, implemented vendor sustainability due diligence and risk assessment, reduced our environmental footprint and improved our sustainability reporting within different areas”, says Iris Rehnström, Director Sustainability at Camurus. Recently, Camurus also renewed the company’s certificate as Nasdaq Transparency Partner. Camurus has always had strong links to academia, and enjoys collaborating with passionate students. During the past year Maja Lundgren from Lund University, Sweden, chose to conduct her master's thesis research at Camurus, focusing on our FluidCrystal® technology.
