    Just speculation but maybe the animators used a live cat as a model since they couldn't get a dragon to cooperate. Commented Jul 22, 2015 at 1:35

    Just so you know, this question had me digging up interviews from 1977 regarding a movie that most people don't know about. They weren't very easy to find. I had to do a good bit of snooping around. But at least I finally found the answer. :)

    Doesn't seem odd to me at all. Isn't that how you'd imagine a dragon? "Toothless" from "How to train your dragon" is basically a cat that can fly and breath fire.

    @Whovian4Life if I know cats, you have better chances finding a cooperative dragon than a cooperative cat.
