6Good answer, but can you provide any evidence that the character on Star Trek: TNG was inspired by Haitian culture?– Wad CheberCommented Jun 28, 2015 at 23:07

@WadCheber: The name is a big clue, is it not?– Lightness Races in OrbitCommented Apr 23, 2016 at 11:55

2@LightnessRacesinOrbit - My name is Chad, but I have no relation to the country of the same name. I made that comment about a year ago, and I don't remember making it, but I think my point was that, while it is possible - perhaps even likely - that the name is an intentional tip of the hat to Haitian culture, it would be better if we could prove such a link.– Wad CheberCommented Apr 24, 2016 at 1:18

2@Wad: But you weren't invented by screenwriters to make an artistic point. :)– Lightness Races in OrbitCommented Apr 24, 2016 at 1:39

9It sounds logical but I notice today's blog post (scifi.blogoverflow.com/2016/08/…) mentions Whoopi Goldberg stating that Roddenberry named the character after Texas Guinan, a flamboyant NY restauranteur (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Guinan). This was also in the Wikipedia page since 2002. Sounds like it's just a coincidence. Which is a shame; I prefer your version.– tardigradeCommented Aug 5, 2016 at 9:49

add language identifier to highlight code
```python
def function(foo):
print(foo)
``` - put returns between paragraphs
- for linebreak add 2 spaces at end

A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
Type the name of the science fictional or fantastical work your question is about (Example:
star-wars
).For questions not specific to any one work, use concept tags to describe your question (Example:
story-identification
).Tagging rules:
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. story-identification), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
