Radagast the Brown (who plays a small part - manipulated at first by Saruman but in his honour helps Gandalf escape from Orthanc - in the Fellowship - and mentioned in The Hobbit) and two blue. I am thinking he named them in the Letters but I can't remember what or if that's in HoME or UT or anywhere else including my imagination.
Dec 14, 2017 at 16:48 | comment | added | Pryftan | @jonnyflash No; he didn't think Aragorn had the Ring: if he had he'd have known if Aragorn had claimed it. He was afraid because he would not have forgotten Narsil. As far as he knew a hobbit had the Ring and he also thought it was the Treason of Isengard; of course it was: but on both sides. In fact The Treason of Isengard was a suggested title at one point; Christopher uses it for volume VII of HoME instead.
Jan 13, 2017 at 14:32 | comment | added | PoloHoleSet | There's nothing "wrong" about that. I said centuries, so that's correct. I never said he was "reduced to nothing," but he was more than just physically reduced. "Once he got his hands on the ring" - which had not happened, and when he DID have his hands on the Ring, he still was destroyed by Isildur at the peak of his powers, so, yes, there was actual risk. I'm not saying that it isn't true that he could do more from a distance, but there was also risk, and the history very present in his mind of being burned by that risk. Your rebuttal doesn't really refute anything in my comment.
Jan 13, 2017 at 9:28 | comment | added | Morg. | @PoloHoleSet that's so wrong... it's about a few centuries and it was clear that whenever he got his hand on the ring he would instantly come back to full power, including a very strong physical form. He wasn't reduced to nothing, merely diminished in physical presence, hence why he focused on everything else and did a damn good job of it. There was no point for him to be on the battlefield without a strong physical presence, he could do more from his tower.
Aug 15, 2016 at 15:29 | comment | added | PoloHoleSet | Not killed, sure, but so weakened and diminished that he has to spend a few centuries or millennia in a miserable, worm-like condition. We do have the historical precedent from the last time he directly led his armies and Isildur cut the Ring from his hand.

As for Sauron being greatest Maia i disagree for me Eonwe and Melian are definitely greater. Sauron though is for sure the greatest in sorcerery and deception which he proves by fooling Eonwe into thinking he had repented, that is how i saw it anyway.
Jan 2, 2015 at 21:00 | comment | added | Joel | Sauron the greatest Maïar ? Not sure Sauron would fare very well against Orömë... He certainly couldn't take on Melian, else he would have destroyed her girdle... That, even Morgoth couldn't do, Doriath was destroyed by treachery from within, not by brute force. And even if he was probably indeed more powerful than Gandalf the grey originally, diminished as he was at the end of the 3rd age, he would probably have met his match against the white rider returned from the dead by the will of Illuvatar.

Oct 4, 2011 at 14:16 | comment | added | Cody C | "Sauron cannot be killed without destroying the ring" I believe it's said his soul cannot be destroyed without destroying the ring. In that case his physical body could be killed.
