Apr 18 at 17:18 comment added chepner It's possible that Círdan has no plan to depart. "until the Last Boat" may be his version of "when pigs fly".
Apr 18 at 16:35 comment added Todd Wilcox Oh, my mistake - I never really read the appendices. Regarding Galadriel, she knew why she couldn't go before passing the test, and she knew what passing the test meant. Like, you know eating a lot of calories in a short amount of time will lead to weight gain - no one has to tell you. You know how that works. Elves know how going to Valinor works. One thing I wonder is how did Cirdan know when the last boat had gone so he didn't have to just wait at the Grey Havens for half the fourth age or something.
Apr 18 at 12:11 comment added Allure @ToddWilcox I don't see where in the link that says how Galadriel knew. It only says why she was permitted to enter. Gandalf would presumably have to learn as well that Bilbo and Frodo would be allowed to go. Gimli went with Legolas, after Aragorn died (it's in the appendix of LotR).
Apr 18 at 12:09 comment added Allure @ToddWilcox Samwise did eventually go to Valinor (he did not go with Frodo/Elrond/Galadriel, but he went eventually).

Apr 18 at 11:41 comment added Todd Wilcox I’ve always assumed Gandalf would have told Bilbo and Frodo, but I don’t see that in the text. I also don’t see anything about Gimli going. So it would seem the only question you actually have is how Frodo and Bilbo knew.
Apr 18 at 11:35 comment added Todd Wilcox Also your link about Galadriel seems to answer how she knew.

Apr 18 at 9:24 comment added Allure @OrangeDog but those people came with explicit missions, and not as messengers.
Apr 18 at 9:14 comment added OrangeDog "The first seems highly uncharacteristic of the Valar" - other than when they sent Eönwë, and Glorfindel and all the Wizards.
Apr 18 at 7:57 comment added Mustapha Mond Gimli's departure is only a possibility: We have heard tell that Legolas took Gimli Gloin’s son with him because of their great friendship, greater than any that has been between Elf and Dwarf. If this is true, then it is strange indeed: that a Dwarf should be willing to leave Middle-earth for any love, or that the Eldar should receive him, or that the Lords of the West should permit it. But it is said that Gimli went also out of desire to see again the beauty of Galadriel; and it may be that she, being mighty among the Eldar, obtained this grace for him. More cannot be said of this matter.
