Dec 23, 2023 at 16:01 | comment | added | Valorum | @YaroslavKornachevskyi - It's mentioned that they have nukes in space at this point. They were the leftovers of various experiments and possible wars.
Dec 23, 2023 at 15:58 | comment | added | Yaroslav Kornachevskyi | @Valorum how? We have problems launchin rockets on high orbits, how can we get ot he high orbit?
Dec 23, 2023 at 15:56 | comment | added | Yaroslav Kornachevskyi | @polantina2 on the other hand - 2d sophon could be destroyed by a simple hit of the rocket. So how it could sustain hit by a meteorite? (Meteorites hit planet contantly, so they whould not be able to build a sophon on the orbit)
Dec 23, 2023 at 15:54 | comment | added | Valorum | @YaroslavKornachevskyi - Because it would be trivially easy to blow it up
Dec 23, 2023 at 15:54 | comment | added | Yaroslav Kornachevskyi | @polantina2 so why not to use that "tapestry" to cover the sun?
Dec 23, 2023 at 12:58 | comment | added | polantina2 | @YaroslavKornachevskyi The second book shows that the sophon cannot propel itself or maintain its shape after two-dimensionalization. It would probably drift like some weird tapestry in space if it was too far from the Earth. This reassured Luo Ji in the second book, because the Trisolarians wouldn't be able to block the sun and therfore interfere with the broudcasting with the sophon.
Sep 11, 2021 at 16:18 | comment | added | Yaroslav Kornachevskyi | That makes them stupid - mankind had ability to send Trisol coordinates at any moment. And so they did.
Sep 11, 2021 at 16:00 | comment | added | Valorum | @YaroslavKornachevskyi - Oh, sure. There's a million things the Trisolarians should have done with them but didn't. They seem content to just keep us contained and scientifically impotent until the arrive of the first elements of their fleet.
Sep 11, 2021 at 15:48 | comment | added | Yaroslav Kornachevskyi | That means that Trisol just need a set of sophons to be placed a bit farther from the Earth, so mankind would not be able to prepare required (more powerful) rockets in a short time.
Sep 11, 2021 at 15:18 | comment | added | Valorum | @YaroslavKornachevskyi - The sophons can only hack what they can see. Dozens of black-body nukes diverging from multiple directions at differing speeds would be a pretty decent way to attack something like that, and there's only a limited number of sophons, so losing one or more would be a significant loss compared to a few nukes.
Sep 11, 2021 at 15:15 | comment | added | Yaroslav Kornachevskyi | but they could employ many sophons. Also they could hack the nuke - disable its electonics in space.

Sep 11, 2021 at 15:09 | comment | added | Valorum | @YaroslavKornachevskyi - It's roughly the size of a planet when unfolded. The means that if it's able to shade the Earth it'll be near enough to nuke. If it's farther away, it won't shade the Earth and won't cause any significant harm]
Sep 11, 2021 at 14:57 | comment | added | Yaroslav Kornachevskyi | But it was able to shield Trisol suns radiation. And it could be placed a bit away from Earth, to avoid nukes.
Sep 11, 2021 at 13:40 | comment | added | Valorum | As a corollary, I think we can assume that it's far enough away to be able to easily avoid nukes, it's probably too small to cause an attenuating effect on solar radiation reaching Earth.
