Aug 5, 2021 at 17:13 comment added Emsley Wyatt I don't believe that the Prime Directive would apply to an Earth colony, just alien civilizations.
Aug 5, 2021 at 16:55 comment added RonJohn @Tim you can bet your last quatoo that Star Fleet would have invaded a major source of dilithium crystals, if the planet's government supported terrorism, and diplomacy failed.
Aug 5, 2021 at 16:09 comment added Cadence Invading a member planet because of internal strife also has a tendency to make your other members rather nervous. Everyone from Vulcan to Bajor will end up thinking "if we don't toe the line, will the Federation invade us next?" and that's never a good look.
Aug 5, 2021 at 15:33 comment added Paul D. Waite @Barmar: that's the great thing about the Prime Directive — it's not actually written down anywhere, so it can have almost any point you want! But sure, I think a reasonable summary of the Prime Directive's purpose is to stop Starfleet from playing god. That's not quite as much of a concern with a colony that was apparently founded by the Federation in the first place (you're not really playing god if you did actually create the society in question), but Starfleet does seem unwilling to interfere.
Aug 5, 2021 at 15:03 comment added Barmar Isn't this much of the point of the Prime Directive?

Aug 5, 2021 at 13:05 comment added Paul D. Waite @Nu'Daq: "Even invading the planet would be preferable to just washing their hands of it and leaving thugs in charge"— not according to Starfleet's values. If you think it's better to invade planets to improve their quality of life, go ahead and find yourself a Borg ship to assimilate into!

Aug 5, 2021 at 8:15 comment added Tim "You can't just go around invading places because you don't like how they're run" unless there's oil there...
Aug 5, 2021 at 7:13 comment added Valorum @Nu'Daq - You can't just go around invading places because you don't like how they're run, not least because other powerful nations might not like how their smaller neighbours are run.

Aug 4, 2021 at 22:50 comment added Paul D. Waite @Nu'Daq: I mean, at least street gangs stick to one planet. That's fewer people in danger. If you want to start your own space police, go ahead buddy! Good luck with that!
Aug 4, 2021 at 22:44 comment added Paul D. Waite @Nu'Daq: sure! That's the thing about planetary civil wars: there aren't any occupiers, everyone's already there.

Aug 4, 2021 at 22:39 comment added Nu'Daq Bull- if an alien power had occupied the planet, Starfleet wouldn't have just left them, they'd have done something about it.
