8+1 Also: The 1st edition Dungeon Master's Guide Appendix N: Inspirational Reading specifically cites "Vance, Jack. THE EYES OF THE OVERWORLD; THE DYING EARTH; et al."– LexibleCommented Jul 2, 2020 at 20:26

4Also note that the DnD magic system is often called Vancian magic after the type of magic in Jack Vance's stories.– NomadMakerCommented Jul 3, 2020 at 4:15

2...which means by right, to OP should now wander over to scifi.stackexchange.com and ask the this question about Zelanzy copying D&D.– T.E.D.Commented Jul 3, 2020 at 17:40

2@Buzz Speaking as a former TSR employee, I can assure you that it is not true that Zelazny had no relationship with TSR. Zelazny was to be the guest of honor at Gen Con in 1995, but before he could get there he died of kidney failure in June of that year. We were all super-sad — he died quite young — and totally disappointed that most of us never go the chance to meet one of our most looked-up-to writers, as he had been required reading for the Lake Geneva D&D crowd for at least two decades up till then.– tchristCommented Jul 3, 2020 at 23:19

2There's a lot more where it came from. For example, the 9th level spell of Imprisonment is also from the Dying Earth cycle (Cugel #1, I think). If you can put up with the slightly stilted, but quite expressive, English, Cugel 1 and 2 are full of wonderful dry wit.– Italian Philosophers 4 MonicaCommented Jul 4, 2020 at 17:59

A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
Type the name of the science fictional or fantastical work your question is about (Example:
star-wars
).For questions not specific to any one work, use concept tags to describe your question (Example:
story-identification
).Tagging rules:
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. story-identification), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
