Spock said it created a new chain of incidents, not that the old one was destroyed. And the word "alternate" could imply (though weakly) that the original timeline still "exists" in some sense.

I would say Spock's use of "altered the flow of history" implies that it is indeed the same timeline and not an alternate parallel timeline.
