18They didn't start out with solid rock; there was already an extensive system of caverns.– Harry JohnstonCommented Nov 6, 2017 at 7:21

28Maybe they threw it into a mile-deep natural pit like the one Gandalf and the Balrog fell into? ;)– AdamantCommented Nov 6, 2017 at 7:36

4Maybe they ground it to powder and let underground rivers carry it away.– AdamantCommented Nov 6, 2017 at 7:37

16I thought they were mines? They mined that stuff. Check out what mines usually do with waste. Please be aware that in a pseudo iron age setting like lotr, mines like that cannot exist. They didn't have the technology. Waste disposal is the least of your problems. A gigantic hall in a mine sounds cool so it exists, but if you dig a bit deeper, it's all make believe and doesn't make sense.– Raditz_35Commented Nov 6, 2017 at 8:22

A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
Type the name of the science fictional or fantastical work your question is about (Example:
star-wars
).For questions not specific to any one work, use concept tags to describe your question (Example:
story-identification
).Tagging rules:
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. story-identification), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
