This sounds really familiar to me -- maybe from a book I read in the 80s? I think one of the main protagonists is a (human?) young woman who is hiding/not wanting to draw the attention of the former host race. The energy creatures decide to attach themselves to just very specific individuals (they don't want a whole race becoming dependent on them again), but they have to hide from that host race because they are still Not Happy.
