Multiple conditions are associated with muscle wasting, including cancer cachexia, AIDS,
sepsis, severe injury [1–4], and treatment with high doses of glucocorticoids [5–7]. The
importance of glucocorticoids for the regulation of muscle mass is further supported by the
fact that glucocorticoids regulate muscle breakdown in several catabolic conditions, such as
sepsis [8] and burn injury [9]. Inactivity, bed rest, and starvation are also associated with loss
