In this next post in the Rails Companion series, we'll add support for integration testing to our Ruby web application. Specifically, we'll set up the Minitest framework and simulate HTTP requests using the rack-test gem. Finally, we'll add some syntactic sugar to make our tests just like Rails. Job listings should stop using non-sense requirements like: ❌ 5 years in C# ❌ 7 years in React ❌ 10 years in enterprise software development They are not only poor metrics but also scare away developers. Judging a developer by the number of years is like judging a book by the number of pages. I know many young developers who are already better than many seniors with 10 years of experience but repeated the same year 10 times. Value developers for the depth of their journey, not the length of it.

I'll be talking about building future-proof React applications on the 30th of May in Bucharest. Everyone needs to have a set of principles they follow so they don't have to think about every problem from scratch. I'll tell you how I've been building React applications for the last 8 years. What works. What doesn't. What to focus on to make sure you don't have to rewrite your application every year. Because programming is about solving problems. But engineering is about maintaining those solutions over time.

The #Sacrilege in #Software #Development that's really not! I had a very interesting discussion the other day with Gérald Chablowski. We talked about several topics in software development, particularly about #junior #software #engineers and how to train them better. At one point, we both expressed the same thoughts about deleting parts of the #code that do not serve anything anymore, and how many junior software developers we worked with felt it was Sacrilege to do so. And I understand the reason. If the code is there, it must have a purpose, so how can I, a lowly junior developer, dare to delete age-old tested and tried code... Well, I'm here to tell you that it is quite all right. In fact, it is expected. I remember one of my early experiences when I submitted code for a project to a client, with all the #legacy code commented out. My boss could be heard three offices over! I learned then and there, in no uncertain terms that I should never do that again. So don't be afraid of deleting legacy code when you're replacing it. You are expected to do so. I recently read an informative post by Tomas Votruba that changed my perspective on something. Instead of focusing just on employing highly experienced "senior" developers, he makes a persuasive case for emphasizing a well-managed, mature codebase. His core idea is that a clean, systematized codebase can actually boost productivity and reduce the need for those highly advanced coding skills. With solid architecture and consistent practices in place, even less experienced devs can work effectively. "Take care of your codebase, and your codebase will take care of you when you're older." It is heartbreaking to find out that Gameloft Cluj-Napoca is getting closed. As an ex-Gamelofter that was also laid off a couple of months ago, I can imagine how hard is for everybody to receive these news. We are talking about humans, living beings, that eat, drink, live in house, have children or pets and for all these things, of course, they need financial stability. Please, if you have any roles in game development available, consider them, as I am sure they are great professionals. Unfortunately I don't think I have any contacts from Gameloft Cluj-Napoca, but feel free to tag them in this post or tell me their names and I will edit the post to include them. For those impacted: I am terribly sorry this happened and I hope you will find your next role soon. Try to stay strong and understand that most likely, this wasn't your fault. It won't be easy, I can't lie, but at some point you will find a role. Try your best to improve your CV and LinkedIn profile in order to have better chances to get a job and don't be shy to contact the recruiter of a role you see advertised. Be extremely aware of scams, as laid off people are most likely to be a target of fake job ads. Try to verify, if possible, if positions really exist on the company's site, try to see if the recruiter is verified or has a history of working with said company and read carefully the messages you receive. Last but not least, in my case Amir Satvat's resources (Sorry for tagging you, Mr. Amir Satvat) helped me a lot and I whole-heartedly recommend them. Today, I delivered my first tech talk. You can find the link at the end of this post. Here's how I prepared: - Researched and read the source codes of various libraries. - Identified their advantages and disadvantages. - Formulated the main idea of the presentation. - Created an outline. - Drafted preliminary slides. - Developed a polished presentation using Slidev. - Iterated on the slides and presentation style with feedback from the PC and mentor - Rehearsed the presentation multiple times, doing test runs. In total, I spent over 60 hours on this preparation. What I learned: - I prepared too much material, enough for a couple more presentations. - It would have been better to formulate the thesis first, then do the research to verify it. - It's crucial to highlight key points in the speaker's notes. - There's no need to rush. A presentation is not about memorizing; it's about having a conversation. The pace should allow you to talk on the topic for 40 minutes, occasionally glancing at your notes. - It's important to write introductory phrases for each slide to avoid getting stuck. - It's not as scary as it seems. https://lnkd.in/eAEmtHMu

Made some UI and code reorg changes for AutoProject. TL;DR for those who missed my previous post: AutoProject is a simple DIY tool to automate project management with AI powered workflows. This POC version automatically creates PRDs and user stories/tasks and adds them to your Linear issues. Next in the roadmap. - Support for Asana, Plane. - Add more nuance to story creation with more form fields. - Support for feature documents, technical spec docs, apart from PRDs. - UI revamp to render generated content in markdown and tasks in a unique accordion styled task list. - Support for local LLM inference via LM Studio #StayTuned Post Credits: Also, planning to do a meta configuration where I use AutoProject to manage and build AutoProject in itself. And that's where everyone is now: going back to SSR, because this is the new correct. All the times before we were wrong but finally we're right. An excellent developer will be amazed by current technology but not blind by convinction. An excellent developer will both acknowledge the current changes but at the same time look at them with necessary critical viewpoints. Criticism and the search for the better will improve technology, not blind acceptance. You can choose to stay in acceptance or healthy criticism. #webdev #development #programming
