I have a stupidly big challenge on the horizon this year, and it’s going to take all of my motivation to accomplish it.

I’m doing my longest run ever; 100 kilometers along the River Thames in London.

Some of the way I will have my headphones off so I can chat to other runners and enjoy the sounds of nature. But we all know when that dark night of the soul creeps upon me, I am going to need music to pull me through.

Music and training

There is a ton of advice online about the best types of music for different types of training.

For example, when doing speed work some running coaches recommend Drum and Bass. It is believed that D&B’s classic 170–180 bpm gives you the perfect cadence for a run to challenge your pace. Elite runners tend to go at 180 steps per minute and beyond.

I have tried it and it does work. Although, I don’t really enjoy Drum and Base.

Some studies out there focus more on the importance of enjoying the music you exercise to, rather than just focussing on cadence. This is simply because sports performance has a huge psychological factor to it.
