  • Was the bit present int the source, i.e., was the parity stored together with the data? Then this would be a case where reading uninitialized memory could trap. (If, by contrast, the extra bit is only present during transmission and computed on-the-fly, it would simply be computed correctly for the arbitrary uninitialized data.)
