Dec 22, 2019 at 0:55 comment added Bass @gyancey sure, that's what the comments are for, I could have asked before answering, but as I said it made for a nice puzzle this way too.
Dec 22, 2019 at 0:47 comment added gyancey @Bass This might give too much away, but if we assume the cake has three equal layers and there is frosting on each layer then my answer will work with equal amounts of frosting to each guest. However, it's hard when making a puzzle to include the negation of every assumption that someone might make.
Dec 22, 2019 at 0:30 comment added Bass @gyancey ah, could have mentioned that in the question. Since the text was deliberately made to resemble a real world situation instead of a purely geometrical one, I took it to mean that the cake resembled a real world cake too. Anyway, it was a nice puzzle this way too.
Dec 22, 2019 at 0:27 comment added Bass @FIreCase Combinatorics doesn't enter the picture either, this is a dissection puzzle, tagged as such, and it applies to shapes of any dimensionality, including 2. Also I'm not quite certain you (as not being the OP) are entirely qualified to tell me what assumptions OP intended to include, but didn't mention. Furthermore, to question your information source's validity for judging my assumptions to be "imaginations", maybe you could do a google image search for "cake", and count how many times you had to click "next page" in order to find a cylindrical cake without layers or frosting.</rant>
Dec 21, 2019 at 22:16 comment added gyancey Frosting is not part of the puzzle but very nice.
Dec 21, 2019 at 22:02 comment added FIreCase "Cake is a form of sweet food made from flour, sugar, and other ingredients, that is usually baked." (source: wikipedia). Your preferences and imaginations are not included in the question phrasing :D Not probability, you are right in that, I wanted to say "combinatorics" :)
Dec 21, 2019 at 21:41 comment added Bass Well, if I were one of the 9 guests, and got no frosting at all, I'd be pretty unhappy. Where on earth did that "probability tag" nonsense come from, though?
Dec 21, 2019 at 21:36 comment added FIreCase Wow, not bad. If there were frosting...and probability tag...but there is no frosting and there is geometry tag.
