    $\begingroup$ Just to make a hash of this: you can buy sprinklers that are programmable (mechanical stops) to sweep out a noncircular region by limiting the spray distance over specified angle ranges. In theory, then, you could take one of the solutions and adjust the sprays so that the entire lawn gets uniform amounts of water :-) $\endgroup$
