🗣 The third Regional Specialization Forum under the SALTOpower project was held at two different places. In the morning there was a visit to Herdade da Mitra and the Molten Salt Platform. In the afternoon there was a meeting to present the technological solutions and their potential, the possibility of establishing the corresponding value chains in the Alentejo and their framework within the EREI Alentejo 2030. 🍃

My name is Diogo Canavarro and I am from Portugal. 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗢𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿? I am an Auxiliary Researcher at Renewable Energies Chair (REC) of the University of Évora. I am leading the unit AOHTP (Advanced Optics and High-Temperature Processes) and my work relates to SALTOpower project through the research on high-temperature solar-driven thermochemical processes (e.g., biomass pyrolysis and gasification) for the production of renewable energy carriers such as syngas, bio-char, and bio-oil. 𝗤: 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗻 𝗨𝗘́𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗘́𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗮? I came to Évora in late 2010, by the hand of my former Supervisor Professor Manuel Collares-Pereira, to start a PhD in Physics within the topic of Concentrated Solar Power, namely on the development of novel concentration optics for such applications. After successfully completing my PhD thesis I continued to work at REC group as Auxiliary Researcher until the present day. My adaption to Évora was rather quick having, naturally, some ups and downs along the way. For me, it has been quite an interesting journey to see the REC group growing - especially considering that I was one of the first persons to join the group - and how successfully the group is developing such an important and crucial R&D in our country. 𝗤: 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 hashtag#GenderEquality 𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗦𝗔𝗟𝗧𝗢𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮? Although Gender Equality has its point and pertinence, I strongly believe that even more important is to support young researchers in this "rush hour of life". Being myself in the very middle of it, and considering how competitive R&D is these days, I find it to be extremely challenging to compatible work, family, and self-development. One always gets the impression that we are lacking beyond leading, sometimes, to some sort of anxiety and desperation. To worsen the situation, we are called to fully and actively participate in multi-tasks at the same time such as R&D development, proposal preparation, project management, student supervision, etc. I believe that a more focused and organized R&D, more suitable to the needs and availability of each person, could have a tremendous positive impact on the attraction of young researchers and technicians, creating a fulfilling environment which could actually raise people's commitment and engagement on their work.
