Mar 31 at 17:49 comment added got trolled too much this week Footage of the latter somewhat easier to re-find reddit.com/r/CombatFootage/comments/1bij777/… (There was more detailed footage from the FPVs perspective on that one, but can't re-find the latter now.) Also, the pro-Russian subreddit with the Challenger footage was taken private in the meantime.
Mar 31 at 17:40 comment added got trolled too much this week @MartinBonnersupportsMonica: yeah, the Russian channels put out some Challenger footage with one being stuck in the Ukrainian mud, and being pulled out by another Challenger, with difficulty. And that was on a training ground. Under fire, less likely to happen. (OTOH here was also Ukrainian footage of two Russian BREMs [1's I think] getting knocked out by FPVs, while trying to capture/tow a Stridsvagn 122. But that at least proves two of those can pull a Western tank.)
Jan 21, 2023 at 22:58 comment added Italian Philosophers 4 Monica @PhilipKlöcking oh, and my apologies. "nice try" was a bit cranky, especially if you were remarking on another comment.
Jan 21, 2023 at 18:51 comment added Italian Philosophers 4 Monica @PhilipKlöcking That's got very little to do with the fact that Germany is blocking the transfer of Leopard 2s OWNED by other, willing, European countries.
Jan 21, 2023 at 18:40 comment added Philip Klöcking @ItalianPhilosophers4Monica That is true, and I think it is absolutely nonsensical to do so, yet a whole different matter. Jörg spoke about the tanks Germany can deliver, Fizz about all Leopards produced and delivered all over the world. I cannot see how pointing that difference out was a "nice try".
Jan 21, 2023 at 12:27 comment added Philip Klöcking @Fizz Jörg wrote about what the Bundeswehr has at their disposal. Yes, there are thousands over all of Europe and the world (Egypt, UAE, ...) but the number of available, battle-ready Leopard 2 in Germany is shockingly low. As yesterday's meeting showed, we don't even actually know how many there are. But there are reports time and again of units that should have 44 Leopards and not even 10 of them are able to drive in all directions and shoot.

Jan 19, 2023 at 0:26 comment added got trolled too much this week @MartinBonnersupportsMonica: it reminds me how the Germans solved the problem of towing disabled Tiger tanks in WW2 (with a pair of two other Tigers.)
Jan 19, 2023 at 0:18 comment added got trolled too much this week @JörgWMittag: You may be thinking of some specific sub-model. There were 3,600 Leopard 2's produced, of all sub-models, according to wikipedia. (The Leclerc ~800 or Challenger 2 ~450 are much more of a rarity in that regard.)
Jan 18, 2023 at 13:41 comment added Rekesoft @ItalianPhilosophers4Monica From your own wikipedia article: "To date, few Chobham armour-protected tanks have been defeated by enemy fire in combat; the relevance of individual cases of lost tanks for determining the protective qualities of Chobham armour is difficult to ascertain as the extent to which such tanks are protected by ceramic modules is undisclosed." At the battle you mention it's not clear if a single american tank was hit by enemy cannons. It's reliability against HEAT is proved, the rest is manufacturer commercials so far.
Jan 18, 2023 at 10:14 comment added Martin Bonner supports Monica Another issue with 60T tanks is if you have recovery vehicles designed to retrieve damaged 40T tanks ...
Jan 18, 2023 at 9:21 comment added Rekesoft "Crucially, they don't stand a chance against Gen 3s because they can't really penetrate their armor." I doubt that very much, given that composite armor is designed against HEAT charges, not kinetical impactors. I mean, no doubt those modern tanks are way better, but it's optics and self-stabilizing weapons which makes the advantage, not invulnerable armor. And as you well mention, Russia has ATM who can work through composite armor too.

Jan 16, 2023 at 21:42 comment added Jörg W Mittag @JJu: Germany has so few Leopard 2 that the units which operate the Leopard 2 don't even have their own. Instead, there is a centralized pool of Leopard 2s that get dynamically loaned out to the units on demand for a limited amount of time. And Germany doesn't even own all of those, some of them are in turn on loan from other countries. Saying that the number 30 is a low number is meaningless without saying what you are comparing it to.
Jan 16, 2023 at 21:40 comment added Italian Philosophers 4 Monica I wouldn't know. I do know Poland is buying 200 M1s from the US, operates about 200 L2s, loathes Russia in general and has been pretty generous to date. Regardless, you aint going to be be seeing Kursk rehappening anytime soon, that's true.
Jan 16, 2023 at 21:17 comment added D J Sims Even for leopards the number being discussed is less than 30
