🌍 💡 On July 3rd, Robert Jeszke, CEO of Centre for Climate and Energy Analysis (CAKE), participated in a closed-door workshop organised by PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Carbon Gap. The event brought together leading experts, civil society, industry representatives, and EU policymakers to discuss the role of #carbon #removal in delivering on the European Green Deal. 🎯 The workshop provided an opportunity to present different perspectives on how to best integrate #CDR into EU mitigation efforts and highlighted the need for a coherent EU policy framework to support the deployment and scale-up of carbon removal in the years to come. 💡 There is no doubt that these discussions will continue, with key issues and next steps to be outlined in the forthcoming months and years. It is of the utmost importance to emphasise that carbon removal through technologies such as CCS/CCU, DACCS, and BECCS are indispensable. 🤔 Achieving the EU's climate policy targets requires a greater focus on carbon removal. For sectors where total emission reductions are technologically or economically infeasible, integrating removal technologies systematically into climate policy can provide additional carbon allowances. This approach frees up resources within the economy, allowing for increased production in other areas. Pricing negative emissions from BECCS and afforestation can lower the carbon price in the EU ETS, ETS2, and reduce carbon costs in non-ETS sectors. Therefore, the development of the negative emissions market and regulatory support are essential for these technologies to thrive. 👏 We would like to thank Carbon Gap and PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research for organising this event, the speakers Ottmar Edenhofer, Mette Quinn, Michael Pahle, Helen Bray, Jutta Paulus and Christoph Beuttler, as well as all the participants who exchanged their points of view. 🎯💡📰 In the meantime, check out our Centre for Climate and Energy Analysis (CAKE) work and point of view on the role of CDR and its integration into climate policy architecture: 🎯 on role and use of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR): 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d6JUCfX7 🎯 on role of BECCS: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/d9YSeu6E 🎯 on role of European Central Carbon Bank (ECCB): 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dXVchp9P 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dZtBefVS #carbonremoval #EUGreenDeal #climateaction #netzero #climatepolicy #LIFEVIIEW2050 LIFE Programme Instytut Ochrony Środowiska-Państwowy Instytut Badawczy / The National Centre for Emissions Management (KOBiZE) NFOŚIGW #ClimateChange #carbonmarket #emissions #carbonprice #ETS #ETS2 #GreenTransition
Yesterday we brought together leading experts, civil society, industry representatives and EU policymakers to discuss the role of carbon removal in delivering on the European Green Deal during a closed-door workshop. The workshop provided an opportunity for Carbon Gap and the co-organiser PIK to set out their different perspectives on how to best integrate CDR into EU mitigation efforts, with discussions focusing on 3 main questions: 🎯 What should be the goals and conditions of integrating carbon removal into an EU compliance mechanism such as the EU ETS? 🔧 What additional tools would need to be applied to account for overshoot and net-negative targets for 2050? 🏦 What advantage would an EU Carbon Central Bank have compared to other institutions in accounting for CDR credits? Throughout the session, there was broad consensus around the need for a coherent EU policy framework to support the deployment and scale-up of carbon removal in the years to come. There were divergent views amongst the co-organisers and the participants regarding exactly what role CDR should play in the future, shaping the preferred policy pathway moving forward. We will continue driving discussions forward, with key issues and next steps to be set out in a forthcoming unattributed summary of the session. We would like to thank PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research for co-organising the event, the speakers Ottmar Edenhofer, Mette Quinn, Michael Pahle, Helen Bray, Jutta Paulus and Christoph Beuttler as well as all the participants who helped make the meeting a success. Watch this space for future publications on carbon removal pathways in the EU Green Deal. #carbonremoval #greendeal #climateaction

💡 🔎 📖 We invite you to read latest article by Robert Jeszke, CEO of CAKE ⁉"How to deal with the European Green Deal? Reflections on Economic Challenges and Strategic Imperatives for The New European Commission". 📖 https://lnkd.in/dZRAmKvH ✴ Robert Jeszke in his remarks highlighted the key challenges ahead for the new European Commission, which will have to ensure economically viable and socially equitable transition, but also that the EU maintains its global position on climate change. One of the key issues he highlighted is that achieving the EU's climate change targets will require a greater focus on carbon removal. ✴ "It is of the utmost importance to emphasise that carbon removal through technologies such as CCS/CCU, DACCS, and BECCS are indispensable. 📢🎯 📖"How to deal with the European Green Deal? Reflections on Economic Challenges and Strategic Imperatives for The New European Commission" 🎯 💡 Europe is at a pivotal moment, standing on the brink of a major energy transition. The urgency of this shift and its economic implications cannot be overstated. The upcoming years will be crucial for the EU to achieve its ambitious climate goals amid evolving political, economic, and geopolitical contexts. By setting clear targets, leveraging financial resources, fostering international cooperation, and supporting innovative technologies, the new European Commission will have to ensure that the transition into a sustainable future is economically viable and socially equitable, keeping the EU in pole position in global climate action. The EU must use its single market and regulatory framework to spur innovation and industrial growth in green technologies in such a way that ensures a resilient and prosperous future for all its member states. ⚙ 🤔 To successfully navigate these challenges, the new European Commission should consider the following recommendations: 1️⃣ Focus on implementation & allow flexibility: Set realistic interim targets for 2040 to maintain public support and ensure a balanced transition. Adapt policies to technological advancements and geopolitical changes. 2️⃣ Reconciliation with financial support mechanisms: Increase contributions to the Social Climate Fund and Just Transition Fund. Expand the Innovation Fund to bridge investment needs beyond 2026 and support low-carbon investments. 3️⃣ Tailored measures and fair burden sharing: Customize transition strategies and financial support for regions and member states based on their specific economic structures, energy mixes, and capabilities. 4️⃣ Strengthen the role of removals: Integrate carbon removal technologies within climate policies to offer supplementary allowances and reduce overall costs. 5️⃣ Support key technologies: Increase investment in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and the hydrogen economy. Accelerate the development of smart grids and energy storage. 6️⃣ Ensure societal acceptance: Implement a strong information and education policy to explain goals, benefits, challenges, and costs. Engage with the public to build understanding and support, providing targeted aid to vulnerable groups. 7️⃣ Tackle the agricultural challenges: Implement policies that ensure sustainable agricultural practices and minimize the food security impact of reduced emissions. 🎯 📖 Here are some of my takeaways on the topic of what's at stake with the European Green Deal. #EUETS #ClimateAction #CCUS #CDR #BECCS #removals #EUGreenDeal #Fitfor55 #LIFEVIIEW2050 #KOBIZE Centre for Climate and Energy Analysis (CAKE)

"Next-Gen Energy and Green Transition: Sustainable Future or Economic Stagnation? Branża musi sprostać rosnącym kosztom emisji i wprowadzać technologie neutralnościowe. ⚡ Jednocześnie, największym wyzwaniem w dążeniu do neutralności klimatycznej w najbliższych latach będą kierunki zmian i tempo transformacji, która będzie zachodziła do 2040 r. Komisja Europejska przedstawiła cel redukcji emisji gazów cieplarnianych do 2050 r., zakładając ograniczenie jej o 90% oraz z największymi redukcjami w sektorze energetycznym, transportowym i przemysłowym.
