How can you ensure your investors share your company's vision?
Crafting a robust relationship with investors relies on transparency and managing expectations effectively. Startups commonly pivot from their initial vision and adjusting trajectory is acceptable as long as the rationale is well-communicated. Most investors comprehend this and will support you if you involve them early on. Investors hate surprises and this usually leads to disengagement. If disagreements arise, investors can voice concerns at the board level; in extreme cases, they might even exit during the next funding round. Thus, gaining their backing before crucial decisions is vital, avoiding post-decision conflicts. Proactive communication is the key to cultivating investor trust and a healthy partnership that serves your vision.

How do you share your exit strategy with your investors?
Planning and timing your exit can be quite tricky but founders must have a high-level exit strategy from the start. This not only helps investors understand your trajectory but they can use their network to put you on the radar of possible acquirers years before it happens. Founders shouldn't obsess about timing their exits too much and should focus on scaling in a fast but healthy way. Sustainable defensible startups are better acquisitions targets in the long run as compared to hyper-growth teams desperate to be bought before they run out of funds. Timing an IPO is a relatively mechanical process that depends on public market sentiment but acquisitions by larger companies or PE buyouts are a longer, nuanced path that needs cultivating.
