They are excellent for getting up close views of things like carpet fibers or paper money. Less than a millimeter isn't really that small, so these cheap usb microscopes can probably resolve details very clearly. At lower resolutions there is less lag and quicker frame rate. Resolutions of 640-800px wide sound low, but might be more than enough to see the work going on very clearly. Obviously quality is subject to opinion, especially on a photography site, but for this application it might be perfect.

It can act as a webcam and can save images to SD etc. so quite useful for the money. For actually doing fine detail work, a stereo microscope like a Mantis is the thing, they can be found cheap 2nd hand.

These devices are surprisingly inexpensive, (eg $60 for LCD screen+2MP camera+"1000X" zoom+microscope frame), and the sample pictures look great - so is the "1000X" lens I've found really worth $120? Will it resolve a sharper image or is it otherwise somehow better?
