  • Subaru and Audi use a centre differential, enabling the use of both front and rear axles on high-traction surfaces like asphalt, tarmac/blacktop or cement, while traditional 4x4s use a transfer case, which when engaged on 4WD low or high, allows both front and rear axles to run at the same speed, prohibiting the system to be run on high-traction surfaces. Other AWDs systems also have the centre diff but they just disengage after 50 to 60kph to save fuel and is the reason why active AWD is the way to go. Cheers.
