Ready for an all-night sexual odyssey? We're going LONG on Stanley Kubrick's final masterpiece, Eyes Wide Shut (1999) which stars then real-life Hollywood A-list couple, Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Trace has a lengthy production history for this Guinness Record-holding film, which appears to be making fun of Cruise's own stardom and sexuality? Plus: high praise for Kidman's two confession scenes, selling the film on sex, the cast that could have been, secret societies on and off screen, and talk of Kubrick "edging" the audience for 2.5 hours. What do you get when you cross From Dusk 'Til Dawn with To Wong Foo... or Priscilla, Queen of the Desert? Apparently you get Jem Garrard's better-than-it-should-be drag queen vs vampires Tubi film, Slay (2024). Spoiler: We both highly recommend this. This is just fun! From four great RPDR queens playing actual characters, to beloved locals, to heartfelt (but not soap box-y) messaging, it's wild how well Slay works. Plus: Adjusting to Crystal Methyd's Bella, ride or dying for Earl and Sheila, paying out for WAP, and our hopes for a sequel. Questions? Comments? Snark? Strap in for an aural assault because we're checking out Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989) for its 35th anniversary. C/W: the cat dies. This 67 minute black and white, nearly dialogue-free film is a wild and intense experience. It's also surprisingly queer! From a sexually dissatisfied hetero couple to men checking each other out during sex to M/M assimilation to jizzy fluids, it's not a reach to say the salary man and the metal fetishist are into each other. And that's without even getting into the metal dick drill of it all! References: > Evan Benner. "Finding Radical Queer Pride in ‘Tetsuo: The Iron Man’ (1989)." Horror Press > Tom Mes. Burn your clothes and seek consent because we're talking about director Nate Dushku's sophomore feature, Birder (2023). Spoilers: we strongly recommend this one. Think American Stranger by the Lake, complete with full frontal nudity and dangerous sex. But there's also plenty of dark comedy here, as well as sex positivity and diverse representation. Plus: Michael Emery's amazing lead performance, a twisty in media res beginning, snapping turtles, and an ending that raises the film a whole half star. Questions? Comments? Snark? Break out your good spring water and raise those limp wrists because we're talking the first half of Grindhouse in Robert Rodriguez's endlessly entertaining Planet Terror (2007). Bazooka-jumping into the conversation are Jamie and Bhavna of the Bloody Broads podcast! Join us as we do a deep dive into the legacy of this film, including its notorious box office flop status, before heaping all the praise on its badass female characters (Rose McGowan and Marley Shelton). From changing history with Osama bin Laden to pushing all the limits of good taste, we've never seen anything like this film before....and we've been to Morocco! Plus: that iconic machine gun leg, debating "bro films," plenty of pus (and pustules) and one hilarious child death. Questions? Comments? Snark? Assemble the V-Squad and check your ID sitch because we are headed to L.A. with Brad Michael Elmore's trans vampire film, Bit (2019). Along for the ride is returning guest Dani Bethea, who has a Frightgown history with Elmore and this very fun film. Plus: praising leads Nicole Maines and Diana Hopper, lamenting the lack of backstory for the coven, Trace's new found love of Boney M, lots of sibling talk, and is this aspirational trans horror...by a straight man?
