UTS’ National First Nations College, designed by WAM in partnership with Greenaway Architects and OCULUS has been awarded a prestigious global WAFX Award for its design committed to delivering meaningful social impact. Recognised with the WAFX award for Cultural Identity as an exemplar of inclusivity, community leadership and global design excellence, the National First Nations College will deliver a transformative experience that supports cultural safety, and strongly evokes an Indigenous presence – promoting Indigenous culture and its values to the world. "This project aims to create a national first, Indigenous-led college creating a new cultural heart of the University of Technology Sydney's Campus that embodies the values of connectivity, sustainability and identity," says WAM Project Principal Simon Topliss. "As this is the third year WAM has received a coveted World Architecture Festival WAFX Award, we're encouraged to see leading design authorities agree that projects centred on delivering significant social impact and meaningful experiences are leading the way." We were delighted to attend the blessing ceremony for Murrays Bay Primary School's new Classroom Block, Manutara last week, celebrating the completion of their exciting new learning environment. Delivering the masterplan, architecture and interior design for Murrays Bay Primary, this project provides spaces that are connected, purposeful, playful, and responsive to changing needs. "The Manutara Classroom Block delivers 10 new roll growth teaching spaces over two levels, through creation of diverse learning spaces that vary in scale and degree of enclosure," says WAM Project Principal and Education Sector Lead Sarah Hewlett Diprose. "Large collaborative learning areas, including group gathering zones and targeted group work areas, connect to smaller breakout areas with quiet reflective spaces located away from primary circulation routes, minimising distractions and creating acoustically separate calm learning environments, particularly beneficial for those with learning support needs. Moments of playfulness, from the colourful stair risers and shading devices, to the Kereru themed glass splashback with ‘unique hidden treasures’ in the makerspaces, all combine to create moments of delight and distinct identity. "We're really proud to have worked alongside Murrays Bay Primary and the Ministry of Education New Zealand to deliver a permeable campus that connects with the natural environment and offers diverse learning spaces that excite the imagination for students and staff." We're proud to see Te Tihi Aurecon awarded the 2024 Interior Award for Workplace over 1000m2 at last night's awards celebration. Designed alongside Aurecon's own He Rautaki Māori rōpū, WAM's Advanced Indigenous Design Unit - Te Matakīrea, and Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, this project 'represents the definition of co-design,' said the Interior Awards jury. "This workplace creatively and unpretentiously weaves local kaupapa into the very fabric of the space, connecting its inhabitants with both the community and whenua. In so doing, it provides considered, diverse and engaging working environments, with an inspiring focus on wellbeing and amenity, including dedicated mauri, wairua, hauora and whanau spaces. Our congratulations also to Emily Newmarch, Associate and Low Carbon Design Specialist based in our Wellington studio, named Rising Star finalist by the National Association of Women in Construction NZ (NAWIC). The 2024 NAWIC Excellence Awards celebrate and showcase some of our talented women working in the construction, building and infrastructure industries. Emily is passionate about advancing knowledge across the industry, and has undertaken a PhD in embodied carbon. Emily generously gives her time and expertise to our projects right across the group, expertly translating technical data on sustainability to creative opportunities that are best for project. She is passionate about the environment, and transforming our client’s climate commitments into meaningful action. "While climate change is our biggest threat, it is also our biggest opportunity to think differently and innovate towards new ways of designing and building." Our congratulations to WAM Associate Principal Brett Diprose, for his well-deserved recognition at the 2024 Aquatics & Recreation Victoria Awards for Outstanding Contribution to the Aquatic and Recreation Industry. Taking place last week, the Aquatics and Recreation Victoria (ARV) Awards showcase the outstanding achievements of individuals and organisations. Brett's award for Outstanding Contribution celebrates and endorses the hard work, dedication and expertise Brett has contributed to the industry.    Brett’s best and most recent work is embodied in projects like Melbourne’s award-winning Northcote Aquatic Recreation Centre, La Trobe University's Sports Park, and the new Adelaide Aquatic Centre currently under construction - all of which deliver positive social impact, respond to environmental needs, and a take a long-term view to performance, ensuring communities can thrive through sport for many decades to come.   From high-performance facilities to grassroots community amenities, Brett sets out to reimagine what sporting infrastructure can be. “The public legacy aspect of what we build is super important and it’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”   Our congratulations to Brett and many thanks for his dedication and commitment to delivering the best facilities possible for our communities.
