I bike 3 hours to work as a supercommuter — here’s why it’s better than taking the bus or driving

Hauling butt to work each day can sometimes feel like an endless cycle — especially if that’s your mode of transportation.

Such is the case for super commuter Alex Heatzig, who biweekly bicycles into the office, burning upwards of 2,200 calories during his three-hour jaunts.

“I commute 50 miles to work by bike,” said the triathlete, a project manager from San Francisco, California, in a viral TikTok video.

Heatzig’s in the number of no-limit 9-to-5ers who routinely take extreme measures to travel long distances for a paycheck outside of their hometowns.

Super-commuting hairdresser Kaitlin Jay, 30, drops over $1,000 to fly the 700 miles between Charlotte, North Carolina, to her Upper West Side place of employment every other week. Breadwinning dad Kyle Rice, an EMS tech specialist, shells out $1,500 a month to hop trains from New Castle, Delaware, to NYC’s financial district for his in-office days at the job.

But for Heatzig, rather than sitting for a 90-minute bus ride or taking the hour-long drive in his own car, biking begets the best benefits.

“It’s the most time-efficient way to get a workout in,” the helmeted millennial told his more than 35,000 viewers while huffing it on a two-wheeler.

He kicks off his superhuman-like super commutes around 5:45 a.m., cruising at an average speed of approximately 18 miles per hour, to arrive at his desk just before the shift begins, per his series of impressive posts.

“My afternoons aren’t full of anxiety about — if work pops up or I need to work late — what am I gonna do about my workout,” continued Heatzig on the perks of pedaling. “I check that box first thing in the morning.”

“It really sets the tone for the day,” he added. “I start my day being damn productive.

“And that kinda just gets the ball rolling.”

The abounding advantages of rolling into work aside, online antagonists often blast the avid biker for his “crazy” commuting practices.

But instead of letting critiques from critics get under his Schwinn, Heatzig shared a few more details of his workday rides.

“This commute I’ll only do twice a week if I’m feeling good, and it’s only on the way to work,” he said. “After work, I’ll throw my bike under the bus and take the bus home.”

“Also,” the sweaty cyclist furthered, “I’ll leave clothes at work the day before and I’ll shower at work.”

“So don’t worry about me smelling up the whole office.”

And as a final note to folks who think he’s nuts, an unruffled Heatzig chuckled and said: “That’s subjective.”
