What are the Challenges of the Future Electricity System? Find the answers in the report issued today by EU Agency for the Cooperation of Energy Regulators (ACER) and Council of European Energy Regulators (CEER). I am delighted to see that the report identifies 1) bottlenecks in distribution grids, 2) the active participation of consumers/prosumers/storage 3) the need for increased effciency of existing grids, as the top priorities Plexigrid was born, precisely, to address and resolve these three questions. #energytransition #gridofthefuture #plexigrid

An energy boost for the European energy transition: the reform of the EU Electricity Market Design has now been adopted – and it is positive news!    Our single European electricity market is an immense feat and key to a successful energy transition throughout Europe. This reform reinforces this with many beneficial components. Progress and simplifications have been made where needed, whilst potentially damaging aspects have been placed under review. Some question marks remain, but now, we are getting somewhere.    So, what exactly has changed? As you can imagine, many technical terms, whose acronyms comprise useful amends and mechanisms.   ▪The option to apply inframarginal revenue caps will not be extended – a policy that harmed not aided the energy transition through creating investment uncertainty for renewables.    ▪Two-sided Contracts for Difference (CfDs) will now be the standard for direct state support and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) will be strengthened. Both are important long-term instruments for investments in renewables.     ▪ Capacity Remuneration Mechanisms (CRM) will no longer just be considered a last resort, with the approval process also to be simplified. These schemes ensure capacities are available and ready to generate electricity for the grid, making sure customer demand for electricity is met. As the share of wind and solar increases, this will become even more important.    ▪ For offshore development, in particular, the addition of Transmission Access Guarantees (TAGs) is very welcome. This concept aims to mitigate the additional financial risks that offshore hybrid wind farms connected to more than one Member State face when their ability to export electricity is limited by for example onshore grid constraints.    But, of course, this does not mean that now everything is all wrapped up and sorted. For example, TAGs won’t mitigate all financial risks for offshore hybrid projects – here it will be vital to define a detailed framework as soon as possible to ensure there is clarity for upcoming projects.    Still, this is all a positive step for the European energy industry. More steps need to be taken, but we are now heading on the right path.

World’s commitment to research ways to generate #CleanEnergy is essential, and #Renewables have to play an important role in this effort, even more once the storage capacity will be commercially ready... Nevertheless we have to understand that for different reasons such as intermitency, lack of storage capacity, grid improvements... we are not yet ready for a #RenewablesFirstFuture... Quoting to Simon Sinek: "Pure pragmatism can´t imaging a bold future. Pure idealism can´t get anything done. It´s the delicate blend of both that drives innovation"... Now more than ever, the world need this delicate blend of pragmatism and idealism to build a sustainable future for next generations!!!

With prices of solar modules sub 10c$/watt even actually lower than 9 c$/watt, what will be the LCOE? I guess Lazard is delaying their 2024 as whenever they made it, PV prices drops and they need to recalculate again and again. Another question, is it still possible to produce out of China?

Below a a link to recommended summer reading for decision makers at European grid system operators and regulators being tired of rejecting grid access and considering how to deal with a 225 to 1,150 GW solar PV increase from 2025 to 2050? Working in a utility investing in a European solar PV and storage where challenge No. 1 for adding more renewables and storage is grid capacity, it is amazing to read this new report not just looking at possible super conductor technologies for the next decade but also mature solutions available for grid operators to increase capacity within a year or three. E.g.: - storage as a transmission asset (SATA) which also can be conducted with private battery energy storage system (BESS) investors making it possible for system operators to loosen their back-up (N-1) reservations and increase supply and demand instead - flexibility management software solutions utilising the flexibility of BESS, interruptible solar PV, heat pumps and other assets to increase flexibility and capacity in the grid - the German NOVA principle: grid optimisation has priority over grid reinforcement, which has priority over grid expansion. We will need both expansion, reinforcement and optimisation to get to 2050 but to realise the opportunities of tomorrow before 2030, more optimisation and reinforcement is needed.

The IEA PVPS Snapshot report for 2024 is just out. The report confirms what we already know: the PV industry made a MASSIVE leap in installation rates in 2023 and set an amazing record for new, commissioned PV installations. The report also acknowledges the challenges in ensuring reliable data: at least 407.3 GW, but maybe as much as 446 GW of new PV systems were commissioned last year. The lowest estimate already represents a year-on-year growth of 70 % or more from the 236 GW reported installed in 2022. More than half of all newly installed power production capacity (W) installed globally last year was made up by PV power plants. This is insanely impressive 😁 In this context, I am extremely grateful for the fact that the Research Council of Norway last week awarded funding to a new, national research center dedicated to PV: FME SOLAR. PV is leading the green transition and represents a huge, commercial opportunity. However, with the current scale, which is anticipated to grow even further, new challenges related to access to area, access to grid, public acceptance and the need for long-term profitable investments emerge as increasingly important. Capacity and skills are also an increasing challenge. I am quite confident, however, that all will be solved!

“There is no energy #transition without #transmission, and that can only happen with the availability of switchgears and transformers. #Grid #investments are accelerating dramatically in Europe and worldwide, and customers are competing for manufacturing slots. This agreement enables Siemens Energy to plan its capacities, which will benefit both Danish and European #energy #infrastructure. We are excited to be trusted to deliver on the #grid #acceleration in #Denmark.” Henrik Riis, CEO of Energinet Electricity Transmission, says, “We need external suppliers to ensure rapid and significant #expansion of the #electricity #transmission #grid. The task is enormous. In the coming years, several high-voltage #substations on the ‘high-ways’ of the Danish #electricity #grid are #needed to secure that #renewable #electricity can be #connected to the #grid and transported around the country. We are incredibly pleased that with Siemens Energy we get a long-term, strategic partnership, thus ensuring that we can keep up with the dramatic development in Denmark.” As renewable energy becomes a bigger part of the electricity mix, grids need to adjust how to transport that electricity. Unlike with conventional generation, wind and solar are often not available where they are consumed, which means the #electricity needs to be transported over #longer #distances, usually at high voltages to minimize loss. Power #transformers are a crucial link in this chain, as they enable both that long-distance #transport, as well as the conversion between high-voltage for #transporting and lower-voltage for #consumers. https://lnkd.in/dJf_hu6G

#Business #Energy Market #Report – May24 - Mostly upward trends were observed across most tracked #gas and #electricity contracts, continuing the overall bullish wholesale pricing movements that have been observed since March. However, day-ahead power was the exception, recording a month-on-month loss. Seasonal gas contracts from Winter 24 to Winter 26 were on average 8.6% higher in April when compared to the previous month.   This was due in part to elevated levels of maintenance across the Norwegian Continental Shelf, limiting total gas flows to GB.   Moreover, forward contracts recorded gains as higher Asian gas demand for storage restocking, ahead of the winter period, bolstered competition for LNG shipments across Europe. Winter 25 was the premium gas contract, averaging 90.20p/th across the month.   Across the month, we saw the day-ahead gas price rise 5.0% to average 71.71p/th. Likewise, front-month contracts were up 7.5% on average when compared to March, with May 24 seeing a 6.6% rise and June 24 recording an 8.4% rise to 71.67p/th and 71.17p/th, respectively.    However, stronger gains were limited by high gas storage stocks across Europe, sitting at approximately 62.0% full at the time of writing, 3.4 percentage points above the levels seen last year according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe. Despite being heavily influenced by its gas counterpart, day-ahead power prices averaged £58.78/MWh across April, down 10.0% when compared to the prices observed last month.   This loss can be attributed to higher levels of wind generation across April, acting to decrease gas demand and the requirement for more expensive fossil-fuelled emitters.   Likewise, day-ahead power was further influenced by a decrease to carbon prices across the UK.   As a result, day-ahead power prices fell to the lowest level seen since July 2020 on 12 April at £26.50/MWh, and GB achieved a new low carbon intensity record of 19gCO2/kWh on the 15 April at 1pm – beating the previous record of 21gCO2/kWh achieved earlier in the month on 5 April.   A bullish trend was recorded across contracts further out on the forward curve, with May 24 rising 2.6% to £61.96/MWh and June 24 growing 7.2% to £63.53MWh. Likewise, seasonal power prices saw an upwards trend, increasing 6.0% on average – with Winter 25 the premium market, standing at £80.89MWh, up 7.0% when compared to March.   Despite these upward movements, stronger gains were limited by the return of the Heysham 1 and Hartlepool nuclear reactors from maintenance at the beginning of the month, bolstering available power capacity across April as a whole.
