"I was surprised that Asmund is a young engineer. Through our several phone calls, I thought he is a very experienced health professional" -a stroke survivor. 👨⚕️ Asmund is our Chief Product Officer, a talented engineer whom every day reminds the rest of the team that we are not just developing "cool tech"🦾, but we are creating an assistive device to improve the lives of a large and diverse group of people with very serious health conditions. Asmund has the design thinking philosophy ingrained in his bones, and he leads our work toward product-user fit. He is our living knowledge bank of user requirements, our rapid prototyping guru, IT administrator, and the enthusiastic guardian of our GDPR compliance. ✅ Asmund was Eirik's flatmate during COVID and their flat was also my home office in addition to theirs (also Vilje Bionics’ corporate headquarters). It wasn't long before Asmund asked to join our journey when he witnessed how Eirik and I were talking about exoskeletons all day. It was a very easy decision to onboard a very passionate engineer with a versatile skill set like Asmund. Before joining Vilje, Asmund, who by the way is a fluent German speaker, had worked for Webasto Group and German Aerospace Center (DLR). He had also been volunteering to make set designs for UKE-revyen 🎭 and playing in "The Lubricators", the student guild band for mechanical engineers.🎸 In our breaks, he is Vilje's ping-pong champion, and in his free time, he sails and climbs. Julia Kenel has been among the top 1% of my students. And my students at ETH Zürich are pretty smart. I won't even hesitate to offer her a position, of course, if you already have succeeded in making her interested in your company" – Julia’s professor at ETH Zürich 🧠 In January 2022, we received an open application from a Swiss robotics engineer who had graduated with top grades from one of the best universities in the world. She had relevant experience with upper limb exoskeletons from The Rehabilitation Engineering Laboratory at ETH Zurich and Hocoma.🦾 At that point, we couldn't afford to have another employee without shortening our runaway and postponing the rise of the co-founder's low salaries. But she was so motivated, very smart, and full of great ideas. We decided to take the risk. So I had a serious talk with her: "Julia, we want you on our team, but if we hire you, we may be out of cash only 5 months after you begin. Are you still interested in moving to Oslo and working for us?" The answer was "YES!". I have been asked how Vilje Bionics manages to progress so fast in such diverse technical fields without extensive use of external technical consultants. Our secret is that we have an employee like Julia with excellence in the core fields, who also learns very fast about the other necessary fields. Julia is the mastermind of our Human-Robot Interaction software and has created impressive and efficient algorithms that make our exoskeleton unique in the world. She has also done outstanding electronics hardware design and embedded programming. She also takes great initiative to connect Vilje with world-leading exoskeleton experts, international mentors, and investors from her network. Julia is fluent in German, English, French, Spanish and Norwegian. 🇳🇴🇬🇧🇫🇷🇩🇪🇨🇭 She has been playing volleyball at the highest level in Switzerland and Sweden and now is competing at the highest level of beach volleyball in Norway. 🏐 She is a knitting expert, and in addition to bringing great humor and energy, she brings lots of Swiss chocolate and cheese to the office. 🧀🍫 Interested in joining our journey and becoming a colleague of Maren and me? A display of how Oslo kommune and Vilje Bionics are shaping the future of healthcare. The collaboration with the Oslo Municipality in the Smart Oslo development project has truly marked several milestones in product development and deepened our understanding of both the users and the health personnel who will be working with our technology. The video captures much of what the project has been: dedication from health personnel, users, and Vilje Bionics. Furthermore, it shows the collaborative spirit that has characterized the Smart Oslo project, that is, the interdisciplinary teams working together, all bringing the best from physiotherapy, occupational therapy, engineering, and design. The support from Oslo and the Smart Oslo grant made it possible for us to accelerate development and growth, underlining the importance of the support scheme provided by Oslo.
