In 1918, Americans released some fish into the desert. Scientists have now made a remarkable find in desert-like area in the U.S. state of Arizona. Indeed, in a lake in that desert-like area, they discovered fish - belonging to three different species - still happily swimming around, most of them more than 85 and some even more than 100 years old! This is reported in the journal Scientific Reports. The study deals with three different species of fish that can all be counted as belonging to the genus Ictiobus and residing in Apache Lake. Apache Lake is a large water reservoir created at the beginning of the last century by the construction of Horse Mesa Dam. Originally, no Ictiobus fish were found in this lake. But that changed when the U.S. government began releasing the fish into several U.S. lakes and rivers in 1918, hoping that a thriving fishing industry would develop in the surrounding areas. And that worked pretty well in some places, but in desert-surrounded Apache Lake, a commercial fishing industry never got off the ground. And partly because of that, researchers can now conclude - more than 100 years after the fish were released into the lake - that some of those released fish are still swimming around in the lake in 2023. Prior to this research, there were about 35 species worldwide with documented lifespans of more than 100 years and there was only one genus (namely Sebastes, or the 'true' redfish) with three or more species within it known to live more than a century." So Ictiobus is only the second genus to have three or more species with lifespans longer than 100 years. https://lnkd.in/eKR33_VB

What if plants could tell you if they’re thirsty or lacking sunlight? 🌱 It would make us treat our houseplants better, yes. But also crop yields in greenhouse agriculture might go up, as farmers would be able to optimize the conditions in which their plants are growing. To that latter end, researcher Batist Geldhof and professor Bram Van de Poel from the KU Leuven Plant Institute developed an intelligent sensor that detects how plants deal with stress. At KU Leuven Research & Development, we are helping this sensor make the leap from lab to greenhouse. We guide both researchers in bringing their technology to the market, so society can benefit from this innovation in the near future. Read all about the invention in the below article by #KULeuvenStories! 👇 #techtransfer #researchvalorization #LRD #PlantSciences
Lees het onderzoeksverhaal 👉 https://lnkd.in/ePpU33_J Bram Van de Poel, Department of Biosystems, KU Leuven Plant Institute __ ‘It's Not Easy Bein' Green’: if plants had a voice, they would no doubt sing along to Kermit's song during periods of persistent drought, pesky insects or overabundant rainfall. Plants too know stress. This can now be detected at an early stage, thanks to a sensor that monitors the movement of leaves. To learn more about how plants deal with stress today, researchers are also looking at the descendants of pioneering algae that made it to land 450 million years ago. What happens if a peat bog is exposed to extreme dry periods? Can this natural sponge resist these increasingly frequent weather events or is it a sensitive ecosystem? What does this mean for farming practices on drained peatlands? Bjorn Robroek has been interviewed by the newspaper Trouw and told about his research. - His models show that peat bog ecosystems can be surprisingly sensitive to drought. - He hints at a possible solution: keep the water levels high and help the farmers transition to farming under these conditions (paludiculture) https://lnkd.in/e-_-Yij6 #peatlands #climatecrisis #paludiculture

A piece of art? 🎨 Or a new experiment? 👩🔬 How important is woody tissue photosynthesis for a tree's drought resilience? 🌳 Kaat De Boeck wrapped tree branches and trunks in aluminum foil to inhibit woody tissue photosynthesis and limit photosynthesis to the leaves. 🍃 Stay tuned for updates! #photosynthesis #woodytissue

Here an insight into the #EURAF2024 from one of the #AFaktive partners 👉 Excursion during biennial congress European #agroforestry federation European Agroforestry Federation (EURAF) Nearly 400 scientists, advisers, farmers and policymakers gathered in the Czech Republic to discuss agroforestry progress. And there is! 👍💪Agroforestry is really gaining a foothold in many countries; ‘helped’ by all kinds of problems (drought, flooding, biodiversity loss, etc.). Agroforestry is increasingly being put forward as a system revenue model/solution. Very hopeful all 🌻🌻🌻🌻

Zeer hoopvol allemaal 🌻🌻🌻
