A new step in our global partnership with Coldplay: a limited ‘Notebook Edition’ LP release of their latest album “Moon Music” will be made using river plastic we intercepted in the Rio Las Vacas in Guatemala.

Over ons
Every year, millions of tons of plastic enter the oceans primarily from rivers. The plastic afloat across the oceans – legacy plastic – isn’t going away by itself. Therefore, solving ocean plastic pollution requires a combination of stemming the inflow and cleaning up what has already accumulated. The Ocean Cleanup, a non-profit organization, designs and develops advanced technologies to rid the world’s oceans of plastic by means of ocean cleanup systems and river interception solutions.

Ridding the world’s oceans of plastic is a massive mission. Can plastic-eating microbes help? Our recent research in collaboration with scientists from the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research reveals that a type of marine fungus (P. album) has the potential to degrade polyethylene by converting it into CO2. However, it does so at an extremely slow pace (~0.2 mg per year). Swipe through the carousel to learn more, and check out the link to the research paper in the comments below.

Extraction #101: another 16,210 kg of plastic out of the ocean to be recycled into durable, sustainable products so it never re-enters the environment again. What exactly do we do with the trash we extract from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and rivers? Find out here: https://lnkd.in/er32-Y-q.

We extracted 953 truckloads of trash in the Rio Las Vacas, Guatemala this year; below you can see what the river looks like before and after operations. Interceptor 006 is located in the Rio Las Vacas, around 16 km north of Guatemala City. The Rio Las Vacas is a tributary of the Rio Motagua – one of Guatemala’s main waterways and a significant contributor to plastic emissions into the Gulf of Honduras and the Caribbean Sea. Watch a timelapse of one month of Interceptor 006 operations here: https://lnkd.in/gvVWkgDZ

What does it take to turn trash intercepted in the Rio Las Vacas in Guatemala into an LP? A lot of collaboration. This week, together with Coldplay, we announced our first collaborative product: a limited ‘Notebook Edition’ of Coldplay’s latest LP, manufactured using recycled river plastic caught by Interceptor 006 in Guatemala. There are many steps involved in the process of making trash sound good - which in this case, meant no external noise, just the clean sound of Coldplay's new album "Moon Music". Thanks to Coldplay, and all partners involved in helping us turn river plastic into music: Biosfera GT, Compuetos y Derivados, Morssinkhof - Rymoplast, and Sonopress GmbH.

Humans produce over 400 million metric tons of plastic annually. That’s roughly the weight of all humans on the planet. About 0.5% of this ends up in the ocean. Ridding the world’s oceans of plastic is a huge mission. it requires partnerships at local, national, and global levels to implement our solutions and keep our operations running around the world. As a non-profit organization, every piece of plastic we extract is thanks to supporters and the generosity of partners such as The Helmsley Charitable Trust who recently announced a $15m grant to support our mission and fund our cleanup.
