I gave an interview to Het Financieele Dagblad on Apple's significant (or perhaps, modest?) adjustments to its App Store policies. With a staggering 2 billion Apple devices in circulation, the debate over Apple's dominance is no longer a fringe topic—it's taken the main stage, spotlight and all. Apple has long maintained its stronghold as the App Store's gatekeeper, imposing app developers with hefty commissions ranging from 15% to 30%. However, the European Commission's introduction of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) has prompted Apple to revise its fee structure and tentatively open the doors to third-party app installations. The essence of my interview boiled down to a mixed reaction: "Nice effort, but it's not enough". Indeed, a 12% cut in fees might appear promising at first glance. However, a 10% App Store fee plus an additional 3% for payment processing is still not in line with the services provided. These charges continue to significantly dent the earnings of many developers that actually enhance the device experience with their creativity and innovation. It's not Apple making the apps great, it's the app developers! We have 5 apps in the App Store, offering banking and accounting as Ageras (known as Tellow by Ageras in The Netherlands). I know how much effort our tech teams make to make life for freelancers and business owners easier with great apps! The DMA heralds a new era of freedom, yet the establishment of a third-party app store remains a daunting challenge for smaller developers. Meanwhile, larger entities face a discouraging €0.50 fee for every download past the one million mark—an expense that hardly aligns with the term "cost-effective." As someone who both critiques and cherishes Apple's innovations (I'm typing this from my MacBook, after all), I believe it's crucial we keep the dialogue open. Apple's estimated €20 billion yearly revenue from app sales alone? It's time for creators to receive their fair share. I'm eager to hear your perspectives on this matter!
