Symeres PhD Prize for Excellence in Life Sciences Research Symeres in collaboration with EFMC Young Scientists Network, is proud to support the next generation of researchers by recognizing outstanding PhD projects through our annual Symeres PhD Prize for Excellence in Life Sciences Research. This year, we received an impressive 35 applications, from which six finalists were selected to present and defend their PhD work at our Nijmegen site. We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the six finalists for their remarkable contributions to life sciences research: 1) Eka Putra Gusti Ngurah Putu 2) Jana Volaric 3) Martin Wilkovitsch 4) Irene Herrera González 5) Jennifer Müller 6) Hermann Neitz The scientific level of all candidates was exceptional, making the jury's task extremely challenging. However, the competition required a final selection, and we are pleased to announce the winners: Gold Prize: Jana Volaric Silver Prize: Martin Wilkovitsch Bronze Prize: Irene Herrera González We commend all the candidates for their outstanding research endeavors and wish them a successful future in their scientific careers. We are already looking forward to hearing about their next steps and future achievements.

Our successful academic collaboration with Stefan Krauss and Jo Waaler at Oslo University Hospital has yielded 3 journal articles, 3 patents, and 8 cocrystal structures of novel tankyrase inhibitors so far. In 2020, our Medicinal and Computational chemistry experts Ruben Leenders, Piotr Nieczypor, sjoerd aertssen, Eddy Damen, and Anita Wegert copublished this J. Med. Chem. article, which discusses the preclinical optimization of a lead TNKS inhibitor. Through a modular synthetic pathway and X-ray crystallography supported SAR analysis, we synthesized a series of novel TNKS inhibitors with improved ADME profiles, exhibiting antiproliferative efficacy in colorectal cancer cell lines. These findings eventually led to several patent applications and follow-up publications. Symeres continues to provide our academic partners with practical and intellectual expertise, creating novel molecules and high-quality scientific content, with great valorization potential. Luc Van HIJFTE, our Head of Drug Discovery and President of the EFMC - European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry and Chemical Biology, is presenting at the 14th International Symposium of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Ankara, at the University of Ankara's Faculty of Pharmacy.
