What happens to a process if I change something? This is Galina Veldkamp, a 24-year-old Industrial Product Design student who graduated last week from the University of Twente with fantastic research at NTS Hengelo. Within the Industrial Product Design study, students are challenged to design products based on graphic, technical and human aspects. Products and processes are analyzed at a detailed level, but a helicopter view must also be taken to assess all the consequences of various factors. The knowledge Galina gained during her studies is extremely valuable to NTS. Her graduation research contributes to making more decisions based on data. With, among other things, the focus on obtaining an OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) figure. OEE is a percentage that compares the performance of a machine with the most ideal machine looking at availability, performance and quality. At the beginning of her research, she talked to many different departments and colleagues. “I just kept going to someone to ask if they could tell me something about a certain subject. The convenient thing is that the office and production are located next to each other. The lines of communication are very short and you can immediately take a look at the implementation.” But... in the dynamic technical environment in which we work, Galina came to the conclusion that a fixed OEE is very difficult. There are too many factors at play causing the number to fluctuate. Consider temperature, employee experience, and so on. Many factors are objective and quantitative, but even more are subjective and qualitative, so making sound decisions based on data is still a matter of feeling. No OEE. And then? Galina has developed a method and demonstrated that influencing factors can be tested with a simulation. Her method clearly shows what happens in the entire process if something changes at certain points. More simply put, 'what happens to departments A and C if I change something in department B?' The simulation gives NTS valuable insights for efficiency and process optimizations, where both objective and subjective factors can be taken into account, including the sensitivity of the parameter to the ultimate goal. On Friday, July 12, Galina presented her research at the UT. This was followed by a round of questions and a discussion where she managed to hold her own. Galina passed her studies with an 8! Congratulations! Her method is also published in CIRP CMS, a publication following a conference for Manufacturing Systems. From September she will be traveling with her boyfriend for 4 to 6 months. Today, at NTS Drachten, we had the honor of welcoming a class of enthusiastic children to our new factory. NTS joined the Dutch Economic Mission to the US and Canada! The event gathered 30 innovative Dutch companies and institutions, emphasizing collaboration and excellence in the semiconductor market, with a special focus on integrated photonics. Among the guests were King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, Minister Liesje Schreinemacher, and our own colleague Willem-Jan van Rooij. The mission aimed to strengthen international relations and showcase our commitment to excellence in the semiconductor market, with a special focus on integrated photonics. A key highlight was signing a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with New York state to collaborate on a next-generation semiconductors. We also visited several leading companies and institutions, including AdvanceCT, Yale Ventures, ASML Wilton, IBM, GlobalFoundries, AIM Photonics ,ventureLAB, and NY CREATES. We are grateful to have been part of this trade mission and to have had the opportunity to meet and collaborate with such cutting edge companies and institutions. This month we celebrated the 10th anniversary of NTS Brno!   We have achieved a lot during these past 10 years. With numerous successful projects and the launching of new innovative products into production since 2014, we have grown a lot. It is this journey that has transformed us into the fully-fledged mechatronics powerhouse that we are today. We are even more excited about what the future will bring. To celebrate this milestone, we organized a fantastic 10th-anniversary event combined with a fun family day.
