Ever wondered what it’s like to be an air traffic controller? ✈️ With Performance-Based Training (PBT), we continuously seek to improve the feedback quality and objectiveness of instructors. The challenge at hand is how to get insight into trainees' cognitive processes. The INSPECT project explored the use of objective and physiological data to assess the performance of (military) air traffic control trainees. The goal is to develop a technology demonstrator that gives instructors insight into particular competencies such as Situational Assessment, Workload Management, and Problem Solving & Decision Making. This approach enables the development of training courses better aligned with individual students' performance and learning progression, ultimately leading to improved operational performance. ➡ Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/e7Hfrfdv #TechnologyDemonstrator #PerformanceBasedTraining #Training

The coming launch of the ESA’S Ariane 6 rocket marks an important highlight in Europese’s ambition for autonomous access to space. For the development of Ariane 6, ESA is working with an industrial network of several hundred companies in 13 European countries, led by prime contractor ArianeGroup. As NLR, we are proud to be part of that network. In the period 2014-2020, we equipped the three wind tunnel models for ArianeGroup with a significant amount of static and reference dynamic pressure sensors, related to various stages in the development of the Ariane 6 rocket: - Aerodynamic characteristics of basic layout - Buffeting and acoustic characteristics of detailed aerodynamic shape - Aerodynamic characteristics of detailed aerodynamic shape The results from the wind tunnel tests performed on the models have delivered the design teams of ArianeGroup valuable data to be able to advance the design over the years. We wish European Space Agency - ESA, ArianeGroup, ARIANESPACE and CNES and all other parties involved, a very successful launch and first mission on 9 July 2024! “As a test pilot, you need to understand what the engineers are developing and want to test. You also have to be able to translate this to the operational environment of a cockpit. To successfully carry out this dual function, it’s a great advantage that I also fly commercial scheduled flights. Because that means I know exactly what’s happening in the cockpit of passenger aircraft." Arun Karwal works as a Research Test Pilot at the Flight Operations department of NLR, the Netherlands Aerospace Centre. The European Clean Aviation CONCERTO Project is aiming to develop a comprehensive set of regulations for aircraft, that will apply to the three main thrusts of clean aviation: hybrid-electric regional aircraft, ultra-efficient short and short-medium range aircraft disruptive technologies for enabling hydrogen-powered aircraft. Furthermore, it aims to assess the feasibility of a digital certification framework that will help collaboration and model-based certification. Safety is a top priority in aviation. In order to meet the high standards in Europe, air traffic controllers (#ATCO) have clear agreements about working and rest times. Nevertheless the work can be tiring. How to manage fatique risk? To evaluate the implementation of #EU rules, and to conduct research into the prevalence, causes and effects of ATCO fatigue, with a view to provide guidance on mitigation measures where necessary, a consortium led by NLR and Welbees was commissioned to collect scientific data on the workload and fatigue of ATCOs employed at air traffic service providers (#ATSP) that provide services in the EASA member states. More than 200 ATCOs participated in a study at multiple ATSPs across Europe. Scientific measurements, questionnaires and interviews all together contributed to a representative understanding of the current work practices, ATCO fatigue prevalence, causes and effects, and concrete recommendations to prevent and manage ATCO fatique. The final report can be downloaded here from the website of EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency 👇 🌐 https://lnkd.in/eZ72KxMD #safetyfirst #fatique #aviation

TNO Human Factors is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Congratulations! 📣 👏 Partners such as Ministerie van Defensie invest in high-quality technological innovations. An effective, reliable and clear interaction between man and machine is essential. Human Factors investigates how people overcome limitations and how work can better match their knowledge, skills and experience. NLR looks back with pride on the good collaboration with TNO in this field. Some examples 👇 - One of first projects that NLR carried out together with TNO; a huge project with 24 partners led by TNO and financed by the EUCLID organisation, a collaboration of European Ministries of Defence, predecessor of #EDA (European Defence Agency). A training philosophy for military simulation training had to be developed, and for this TNO and NLR contributed to the simulation training. It also required empirically investigation to what extent a simulator movement system contributes to the training effectiveness of fighter pilots (using the NLR's F-16 GFORCE simulator 📸). - The SafeSound project was about creating a voice recognition system in the cockpit of civil aircraft to provide inputs to the aircraft. They did not use the small microphones on headphones, but microphones on the glareshield, and also cleverly placed loudspeakers to provide 3D audio. The pilots therefore did not have to wear a headset to experience all the benefits of the system. And that already in the period between 2002 and 2007. - In-flight incapacitation as a consequence of medical problems is a rare event as one of the conclusions in the study about current age limitations for commercial air transport pilots (CAT), conducted for EASA - European Union Aviation Safety Agency in 2019: https://lnkd.in/dU46wEJn. - In 2021 the study on how different degrees of EU-harmonisation and air travel growth affect Air Traffic Controller (#ATCO) and Engineering Staff (#ATSEP) social issues and working conditions, conducted for the European Commission. Among the findings, Air Navigation Service Providers (#ANSP) pointed out that cultural differences make it difficult for them to adopt some mitigating measures that proved useful elsewhere: https://lnkd.in/dvbVz8c2. #innovation #collaboration #keepupthegoodwork

To properly regulate and ensure people will not experience excessive hindrance due to operations of rotorcraft, noise level predictions are necessary. When it comes to fixed wing planes, trains or cars, established tools are readily available to map this out. For rotorcraft, however, tools are lagging behind. The NORAH project fills this gap for (local) authorities to perform noise impact assessments. 🚁 Would you like to know more?
