The LeidenAsiaCentre is the expertise centre for socially relevant and applicable knowledge on modern East Asia.
Over ons
The LeidenAsiaCentre is the Netherlands’ expertise centre for socially relevant and applicable knowledge on modern East Asia, including Singapore. It actively aims to expand its expertise and to use this in collaboration with a growing number of diverse societal partners, in particular the business sector, the social midfield, the media, governments and academic and non-academic knowledge centres. The LeidenAsiaCentre achieves this by: • Consulting with the societal field in identifying research questions • Conducting original academic research, taking into account the needs of partners in society • Building and expanding a broad network within the Dutch government, the media, educational institutions, the business sector and the social midfield • Disseminating knowledge by means of lectures, conferences, intensive training courses and publications, including web publications The LeidenAsiaCentre organizes its research projects and other activities around a number of core themes agreed for the coming period, each of which has an average duration of approximately two years. The core themes decided in 2015 are: ‘China in the Netherlands’, ‘The Netherlands in China’ and ‘Human Rights’. In what ways is Asia important for the Netherlands, and what does the Netherlands mean for Asia? Our research will contribute to strengthening and improving the relations and understanding between people, organizations and governments in Asia and the Netherlands. The LeidenAsiaCentre focuses primarily on East Asia: China (including Taiwan), Japan, Korea and Singapore. At a later stage we will expand our activities, first to South East Asia and in particular Indonesia, and in the longer term to other Asiatic regions. If you are interested in our research or in a possible partnership, we invite you to contact us via info@leidenasiacentre.nl, or visit our website: www.leidenasiacente.nl

In recent years the Netherlands has tried to strengthen regional ties with Japan by being involved in cultural collaboration programs such as Holland-Kyushu (2016-2017), Holland-Kyoto (2019-2020), and NL-Kanto (2021-2023). What is the impact and legacy of these cultural connections and do these initiatives, supported by the Dutch Embassy in Tokyo, actually lead to long-term partnerships with regional governments? LAC researcher Beste Sevindik will present her report on this topic on the 26th of June. Sign up now on the LeidenAsiaCentre website via this link: https://lnkd.in/e3DzF-Q7

#SecondThomasShoal #BRPSierraMadre https://lnkd.in/eABAWi4T

Most of the recent commentaries on North Korea-Russia relations are focused on explaining the Russian perspective - why Russia is turning to North Korea. My colleague Elena Guido at the LeidenAsiaCentre who specialises on the DPRK, and myself Eric Siyi Zhang addresses this issue from a different angle: We analysed North Korea's motives on developing a closer military and strategic tie with Russia. It's an exchange of ammunition with food, military technologies, and geopolitical leeway. Most importantly, they are the only partner for each other with which this quid pro quo is possible at this moment. As surreal as it is, North Korea has become a relevant player in European security. In order to understand this new reality in a meaningful way, more research on the DPRK based on area-specific knowledge is needed!
Great article by LeidenAsiaCentre's researchers Eric Siyi Zhang and Elena Guido about the ever closer relationship between Russia and North-Korea - with serious implications for Europe. #dprk #northkorea #russia #leidenuniversity. https://lnkd.in/emcVkd89
