While headlines around the Euros have focused on the games and the players, it’s great to see some recognition of the unseen and important work behind the scenes to secure the events. For example, in the face of rising cyber threats from state actors - specifically from Russia - our client D.LIVE GmbH & Co. KG didn’t want to take any chances during the Ukraine vs. Slovakia match in Düsseldorf. So they asked us to protect the event. A team of ethical hackers, with Bryan Sanders in the driving seat, ensured the event was, well, uneventful. Much of the team, led by Lodi Hensen, VP of Security Operations, has a background in securing companies and countries from cyber attacks. It’s a high-end service that we make available for our customers 24/7. The last few months we've seen a sharp rise in Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks where number matching MFA is being bypassed. We’ve seen this trend both in our Incident Response engagements and at our own clients, whom we protect 24/7 with our MDR service. Fortunately, our SOC mitigates BECs swiftly and with little to no impact on our clients. Bart is lid van het European Parliament en een expert op het gebied van cyberveiligheid, energietransitie, en het aanpakken van desinformatie en buitenlandse inmenging. Als rapporteur van de NIS2-richtlijn weet hij alles van de nieuwste ontwikkelingen in digitale beveiliging. 'I hacked the Dutch government and all I got was this lousy t-shirt' Our security operations team is motivated to help other organisations become more cyber resilient. So they spend much of their time - at work and at home - identifying vulnerabilities. In the course of their investigations, they found a few critical vulnerabilities, including an SQL injection on a particularly sensitive Dutch government website. Of course we immediately notified Nationaal Cyber Security Centrum (NCSC-NL) (Dutch GovCert) who patched the vulnerability within hours. Big shout-out to their Responsible Disclosure process (it really works), to DIVD Dutch Institute for Vulnerability Disclosure as well as our team. Responsible Vulnerability Disclosure (RVD) is critical to ensuring we as a community support each other in the fight against cyber crime. As we expand our capability beyond Benelux to Germany and the DACH region, we will continue to hunt for threats, only disclosing information to organisations affected through the proper channels. And maybe print a few more t-shirts along the way.
