VIDEO: Butler School of Music Premiers Opera Composed by UT Senior

Josíah Garza honors his grandmother and mothers everywhere with one-act opera “Maria”

Wednesday, Nov. 29, and Thursday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m., the Butler Opera Center at The University of Texas at Austin will present the one-act opera “Maria,” composed by UT senior Josíah Garza with libretto written by UT junior Demian Chavez Galvan. Garza is a double major began at UT as a biology major and added music composition.

Directed by faculty member Garnett Bruce and performed by a cast of undergraduate and graduate voice students, the opera is autobiographical and honors Garza’s grandmother. The opera will share the program with scenes from other works and is part of the 20th anniversary of the Butler Opera Center within the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music.

The program will be held in the Butler School of Music’s McCullough Theatre and admission is free.
