Here's a way you might start answering your own question: find a lead sheet (melody + chord symbols) and write out the melody plus an accompaniment made up of only chord roots. After doing this a few times, try the same exercise where the accompaniment is only chordal thirds, then only chordal fifths. Finally try writing the accompaniment using the nearest chord tone, regardless which part of the chord it is. | |

Would asking something like that be too broad of a question? | |
