KWAM

KWAM

Eastern Cape native Sino Msolo’s third album KWAM is an engaging expression of his duality. Pairing amapiano with richly layered Afropop that folds in licks of R&B, maskandi, rap and soul, the singer-songwriter navigates both worlds with aplomb. As the sonic direction is provided by Sam Deep, 031 Choppa, Musa Keys and Kelvin Momo, Msolo roots this offering in the idea of home. Fellow vocalists Donald, Starr Healer, Loki, Zain SA, Baby S.O.N and Thando Zide help explore this notion and its relationship to people, feeling and place. A fusion of neo-soul rhythms and a kwaito-adjacent bassline, the titular “Kwam” embodies this before the nostalgic acoustics of “Emakhaya” espouse the album’s yearnful essence. The longing takes a romantic turn between the log drums of “Ndiyagodola” while heartfelt declarations occur over the strums of “Ama Hem Hem”, underscoring the message of companionship on “Mntase” and “Soyi two”. Across these soulful offerings, Msolo’s dualistic approach extends to his presentation of home as a geographic location and, more abstractly, where affection lies.
