Within the Ruins certainly are savage enough to pulverise ears. At the same time, their mechanised deathcore boasts endless layers of technical complexity. As early as their 2009 debut, the Victory Records-released Creature, the band were already in command of their MC Escher-like songwriting. Jump forward a handful of albums to 2020’s Black Heart, and their songs still unfold as though they are ever-shifting staircases built from progressive fretwork and djent rhythmic patterns; only now they’re being fed through cut-and-paste studio processes that morph them into what can only be described as hyper-aggro video-game music.
