3This should have some context. In the internet age the compound word "downvote" has become a proper noun and is lexicalized. Thus it can be written as you propose but it will cause strangeness to a number of readers and personally I have mixed feelings if I prefer it one way or the other. 4@bad_coder There’s Can we downvote "down-vote" and "up-vote" in the Help Center?, which suggests that “upvote” and “downvote” are the canonical spelling.– Sebastian SimonCommented Dec 9, 2021 at 11:11

@SebastianSimon that post is about removing hyphens from tags. It doesn't make a canonical conclusion. (But excellent link, I had read that post.)– bad_coderCommented Dec 9, 2021 at 11:21

3The “Justification” section is about how the spellings “upvote” and “downvote” should be preferred over “up-vote”, “down-vote”, “up vote”, or “down vote”.– Sebastian SimonCommented Dec 9, 2021 at 11:23

How to Tag
A tag is a keyword or label that categorizes your question with other, similar questions. Choose one or more (up to 5) tags that will help answerers to find and interpret your question.
- complete the sentence: my question is about...
- use tags that describe things or concepts that are essential, not incidental to your question
- favor using existing popular tags
- read the descriptions that appear below the tag
If your question is primarily about a topic for which you can't find a tag:
- combine multiple words into single-words with hyphens (e.g. stack-overflow), up to a maximum of 35 characters
- creating new tags is a privilege; if you can't yet create a tag you need, then post this question without it, then ask the community to create it for you
