A vacuum is a volume of space that is essentially empty of matter, such that its gaseous pressure is much less than atmospheric pressure. A false vacuum was a vacuum which existed in a metastable state.

According to Doctor Phlox, germs were able to survive in a vacuum. (ENT: "Breaking the Ice")
