Tysess

Commander Tysess was a male Andorian command division officer who served as the first officer of the USS Dauntless and the USS Voyager-A under Vice Admiral Kathryn Janeway and later Captain Chakotay in the late 24th century.

Starfleet career[]

Service aboard the Dauntless[]

He was on the bridge in 2384 when the Dauntless's sensors detected a third proto-warp signature originating from the USS Protostar. (PRO: "A Moral Star, Part 2")

He later reported to Janeway that they had tracked the USS Protostar's warp signature to Tars Lamora. (PRO: "Asylum")

When Janeway ordered the Dauntless to pursue the Protostar into the Romulan Neutral Zone, Tysess refused to obey, as doing so would constitute an act of war and jeopardize ongoing negotiations with the Romulans. He reminded Janeway that she had once counseled him against being guided by his emotions, and stated his belief that she was allowing her concern for Captain Chakotay to compromise her judgment. Later, the Protostar suddenly exited the Neutral Zone, stopped right under the Dauntless's nose, then hurled toward Federation space at high warp. Tysess immediately called the Admiral to report to bridge, but Noum stated she was not answering comms, leading Tysess to wonder where she was since they needed her immediately. When Tysess asked if they could get closer to the Protostar. Ensign Asencia suggested that they could close gap if they rerouted power from quantum slipstream--that would allow them to merge their warp fields and lock onto their course. When Dr.Noum argued that if the Protostar engaged their proto-engine, they’d be torn apart. Asencia pointed out that the proto-drive was offline and reminded Tysess that the Admiral did not want them to lose the ship.

When Admiral Janeway arrived on the bridge, she displayed highly erratic behavior. After uncharacteristically spitting out her coffee, Admiral Janeway suddenly put Tysess (whom she referred to in this instance as "antenna") in charge and quickly left the bridge. Meanwhile, Asencia reported that the Protostar was headed toward a restricted area of space which Tysess recognized as awfully close to the heart of the Federation. He informed the crew that he'd contact Starfleet Command and recommend they divert all ships to that sector.

Tysess, Noum and Asencia then went to Janeway's quarters where they found her dancing erractically. When Tysess informed her that they were taking her to Sickbay, she protested and bolted from the room, only to be subdued and placed in sickbay in restraints for her own protection.

Later, on the bridge, they discovered Janeway, in an environmental suit, was walking along the outside of the Dauntless. Tysess demanded that she be beamed back but Noum stated that the merged warp field made that impossible. While Tysess insisted that they find an option before she burned herself alive, Noum complained that she was endangering the lives of everyone aboard the ship. Ultimately, they were able to pull the admiral back in with a tractor beam and have her placed in the brig. (PRO: "Mindwalk")

When the living construct turned Starfleet against each other, Tysess was one of those affected by the universal translators going off-line and was unable to understand Janeway's orders to abandon ship, suggesting that he didn't speak Federation Standard. (PRO: "Supernova, Part 1")

After the crew of the Protostar destroyed their ship in order to save Starfleet from the living construct, Janeway ordered Tysess to launch a search and rescue mission for them. Tysess argued that with the distance that the ship had crossed such a search could take months, but Janeway pointed out that the crew had just saved Starfleet and she wanted to know if they had survived or not. Service aboard the Voyager-A[]

Later that year, Tyssess, along with Dr. Noum were reassigned from the Dauntless to the USS Voyager-A, a Lamarr-class science vessel and continued to serve under Admiral Janeway. Along with The Doctor, he was one of the three officers involved in Janeway's plan to rescue Chakotay with or without Starfleet Command's approval using the Infinity. The three expressed their support for Janeway and their willingness to go against orders if it came to it. After the young Protostar crew found the ship, Janeway decided to tell them the truth and they agreed to keep it a secret, only to have the Infinity launch into the wormhole too early with the most of the Protostar crew and Maj'el onboard. Tysess helped to coordinate Voyager's efforts during the mission into the future, warning of the creation of a temporal paradox. Like everyone else, he was dismayed to learn that an accidental alteration of the timeline had resulted in Chakotay and Adreek-Hu being lost in the wormhole along with the Protostar. (PRO: "Who Saves the Saviors", "Temporal Mechanics 101")

After the Infinity's return, Tysess took part in the investigation and was greatly frustrated by the crew's actions. He later informed Janeway of the modifications made by the mysterious entity to reroute the ship's power grid, leaving him baffled as to how kids could make those kinds of calculations. When Admiral Edward Jellico ordered Voyager to close the wormhole, thus potentially closing off any chance of finding Chakotay, Tysess and the rest of the bridge crew expressed their support for Janeway who was struggling with potentially losing her friend for good. Tysess later reprimanded Dal R'El and Gwyn for leaving a tricorder aboard the Infinity, but briefly softened as he explained that the Infinity -- which violated three Federation treaties due to its cloaking device -- was going to be destroyed shortly. After Dal suggested that they just cloak the ship so that no one would know, the usually serious Andorian officer gave a rare laugh. Tysess expressed to Janeway his admiration for the resilience of the Protostar crew, a sentiment that she echoed. Along with the rest of the crew, they both believed the Infinity to have been destroyed by being flown into a class b hypergiant on autopilot, unaware that the Protostar crew had actually stolen the ship and left behind holo-duplicates in order to avoid detection. Along with the rest of the crew, Tysess was fooled by the holo-duplicates for a week until Maj'el noticed their strange behavior and reported it. After the deception was discovered, Tysess was the one who realized that the kids had stolen the Infinity which was Voyager's only auxiliary craft that couldn't be accounted for. Upon arriving at the Infinity's destination, Voyager attacked the Loom in order to defend the young crew and Wesley Crusher. With the Loom attacking the ship directly, Janeway sent Tysess and the rest of the command staff to Voyager's battle bridge while she used a shuttle to lure the creatures away before suddenly being dropped back into the captain's chair by Wesley. (PRO: "The Devourer of All Things, Part II")

After the temporally-displaced Protostar rendezvoused with Voyager, Tysess worked with Rok on finding a way to send the ship back in time to Tars Lamora. However, Jellico ordered both ships back to Earth where Voyager's crew would be reassigned, Janeway returned to her desk, the Protostar crew reevaluated, and the Department of Temporal Investigations would handle sending the Protostar to the past. Tysess reluctantly agreed with Jellico that Janeway might be too close to the situation, pointing out that they couldn't go rogue again. (PRO: "Ascension, Part I")

However, shortly thereafter, Voyager was contacted by Ilthuran with a warning about Asencia's temporal weaponry and Asencia launched the Rev-1 against the two ships. When Voyager was hit by the Incursor, Tysess was close by and was affected by the weapon's temporal radiation while helping a crewmember to escape, aging him rapidly. Noum teased Tysess about the Andorian now having seniority, but The Doctor reassured Tysess that he would be able to restore the Andorian to normal with a week of Cerberusian gene therapy. Voyager and the Protostar were sent to Solum to find the source of Asencia's new weaponry and stop it at all costs. The recovered Tysess took part in the discussion of how to handle the situation along with Noum, Chakotay, The Doctor and Gwyn. Tysess expressed concerns that Starfleet's presence alone could spark a war, one that Starfleet could lose with how stretched thin it currently was. Gwyn suggested the alternative of sending the Protostar crew in who, not being Starfleet personnel, could go in without escalating the situation or violating the Prime Directive and Jellico's orders. Tysess objected to Gwyn's request to rescue her father as Starfleet couldn't pick sides in a civil war, but Janeway agreed to offer Ilthuran political asylum as he could be their best shot at peace. When Voyager arrived at Solum, Tysess reported on the fleet that the ship was detecting that was nearly ready to launch. Tysess agreed to look after Bribble for Rok-Tahk while they were gone. He was later present when Ilthuran and Wesley were beamed to Voyager by Dal and Wesley warned everyone that they were all in danger. (PRO: "Brink")

Tysess later reported to Janeway that Asecnia was broadcasting on all subspace frequencies, revealing her capture of the Protostar crew and taunting Janeway to come and rescue them. Although unhappy to have to do so, Tysess argued that a Vice Admiral was far more valuable than a few would-be cadets and Janeway shouldn't go into the obvious trap. However, Janeway refused to leave the crew to face the consequences of her actions and Chakotay, The Doctor, and Wesley volunteered to go with her, leaving Tysess in command of Voyager. With Janeway deciding to help stop Asencia and send the Protostar back in time, the two ships approached Solum, finding Asencia opening up dozens of space-time rifts for her fleet leading to every major Federation base across three quadrants, including Earth. In the following battle, Voyager and the Protostar distracted Asencia's fleet to buy time for Dal, Gwyn, Jankom Pog, and Murf to open the wormhole to Tars Lamora once Wesley, Zero and Rok figured out the science. During the battle, Tysess reported that Voyager didn't have nearly enough quantum torpedos for the enemy fleet, but they bought enough time for Dal and Jankom to open the wormhole, causing the other rifts to close on and destroy Asecnia's ships. With the Loom swarming from the wormhole to devour the prime universe, Janeway had Voyager cover the Protostar as it was flown into the wormhole, successfully sending it to the past and causing the Loom to return to their own dimension. After Voyager exited the wormhole, Tysess reported that all temporal incursions were gone, meaning that they had been successful in repairing the broken timeline. (PRO: "Ouroboros, Part II")

Following Janeway's decision to go into early retirement, Chakotay became the new captain of Voyager with Tysess continuing to serve as his first officer. (PRO: "Ouroboros, Part II")
